Get the Canon flashes IMHO. It's not that much money. Or buy proper decent manual flash units.

If you find yourself at a place in your photography where you want to use Flash then you'll appreciate decent flash units. Recycle times, build quality, compatibility with your cameras interface etc.. are all good reasons to get Canon.

If it's a case of just wanting more light in certain situations - then maybe a 1.4 aperture lens (Sigma 30 1.4 maybe) and cranking up the ISO is a better option.

There was a couple of 550's in the used forums for $150 each. Built like tanks and have decent power.

What about for a Canon 350D? Wanting a flash bad but in the same boat as the OP - cant decide on Canon or not.
