True but the small and the APS-C is what interested me... I should have said 'except for the X-pro 1 which is cost prohibitive, and the Sony 5n' (I forgot about the 5n).

Wouldn't surprise - I think Sony make the best SFF (ie, 35mm and below) sensors. I hope the rest of the company doesn't drag the semiconductor section down.

Depends on how you think about it. As a single body+adapter+lens set, then yes it's a waste of time IMO. However if you're looking at traveling with, for example, this EOS-M + 22mm pancake in hand with an adapter+85mm F/1.8 in a bag then it makes a whole lot more sense.

Don't get me wrong, it would be much nicer if Canon (or any others) made a nice thorough set of relatively fast yet small primes for a good price to suit these mirrorless bodies, but that hasn't happened (i.e. at a MINIMUM 20mm F/2, 40mm F/2, 85mm F/2.8 on APS-C). And until something like that happens then the above travel kit is an example of why I'm interested in this (given my existing lenses).

I find the relatively slow and not particularly small EF-M 18-55 far more stupid than the adapter.

To give it some perspective, the 1100D is only 3mm deeper than the EOS-M with adapter. It's also only 90grams heavier than the EOS-M with adapter.

The only advantage this body has over an entry level EOS DSLR's is the use of the new 22mm prime. And it's a hefty price premium you pay to use it.

This is as close as you'll get for now.

Easily the three best value lenses available.

The 12mm in particular has amazing build quality and rendition for the money.

shame pentax K1 is so chugly (chunky + ugly)
ftr: its totally possible for small fast primes. i have high quality pancake 40mm f/2 and 20 f/3.5 FF voigtlanders. they even got a 20 2.8 now... although they are all manual focus only

I think thats being too kind.

Hopefully they can get it right with the next model.....and the same goes for the Canon EOS-M.

But the 12mm is so expensive

I wouldnt really call it awesome value. Doesnt mean i dont want one, but $900 isnt cheap for something that needs barrel distortion correction, and its sharpness while pretty good is not stellar (for the pricetag and a prime) IMO. Half the price and i'd definitely have one though. Not including the lens hood is pretty cheap too

Find me another (new) (autofocus) lens that feels better in the hand and has nicer rendition for the money

nfi lol

back on topic, i was just look at pentax's mirrorless offerings and made some interesting observations:

K01 - same size as a small DSLR but just without the VF bulge, and about 800 for basic 1-prime kit
Q- tiny and about $500 with basic 1-prime kit

interesting to note, the pentax Q with its tiny 1/2.3" sensor with plastic lenses still costing a pretty penny. as good as the engineers at pentax are, the camera still ends up quite bulky depth-wise. which means considering we dont make a major optical-physics breakthrough, we wont be getting big sensor for tiny lens package any time soon

pentax k-01's pancake prime is super thin at 9.2mm. however once you add the focal flange distance it becomes bigger than pocketable
