I'm about to head off on a 4 week trip to Malaysia/Vetnam and Cambodia.
The Vietnam/Cambodia legs are all booked in, and fairly busy (eg 4 nights in 4 different cities, 4 nights in 1 city, 4 nights in 4 different cities, 4 nights in 1 city, etc). I originally planned for a full week in Kuala Lumpur as a nice easy lead in to the Vietnam/Cambodia leg... Now I am thinking that that may be too long, and it might be worth splitting it with a few days on the beach in Penang. Would 3 or 4 days in KL be enough? Is 2 or 3 days in Penang even worth it?

If you are a slow traveller, you can definitely have enough to do for 1 week in KL, especially if you take day trips out to nearby regions. But realistically I think 4 days is plenty in KL, even more so if you are not into shopping malls.
I suggest you take a look at AirAsia's website, and see what specials are available for your dates in KL. Penang is a good destination, but it's also quite touristy, so you may want to go somewhere more off the beaten track.

langkawi is another great place to chill out for a while down on pantai cenang at Babylon bar if you're looking for a quick and cheap place not far from KL, but KL is a fun place with great food and excellent malls (Pavillion is awesome!).
Penang is definitely worth it! Have been there a half-dozen times, great to head to Batu Ferringhi and stay at the Park Royal... |

We did a total of a week in KL in two stops, it was too long. 4 days would be enough.

Also, if you're flying, fly Firefly between the two: http://www.fireflyz.com.my/. They use the "old" Subang airport, which is much more convenient than KLIA or the LCCT at the new big airport. I can recommend a good place to stay in Penang, a good guide for a tour around the island (I used to live there and I found the one-on-one tour was great), and some good eats
