Question Galaxy S3 Faulty out of the box. How to return?

Hey guys,

A girl I know got a Galaxy S3 from her ex-boyfriend and the box was sealed and had never been opened. We opened the phone and tried 3 different SIMs (Optus, Voda, Telstra).. all get reception but can not make or receive calls.

Samsung have got us to reset the phone and it still does it. They checked the IMEI (twice) and the phone isn't reported stolen or blocked on their end so they say it is a faulty phone and a receipt must be shown to the store it was bought from in order to get a replacement.

I don't see how a brand new phone can be faulty, but anyways my real problem is that we don't have the receipt and the ex-boyfriend of my friend won't give it to her or tell her which store he got the phone from..

Surely Samsung don't need to see a receipt for them to know it is their phone and for it to be replaced?

Any ideas as to how to get the phone replaced without the original receipt? I've been trying to sort this out at 3 different phone shops for 2 days now.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like the IMEI has been blocked.

Chuck the IMEI in the link here to be sure.

No Samsung don't have to do anything unless you can prove you purchased the device (receipt/bank statement/stamped warranty card etc).

What actually happens when you make a voice call, do you get a recorded message or it just won't work?

anything can be faulty out of the box . My One XL was faulty out of the box , but i had the receipt and it was swapped . Without a receipt your only option is to send it away to get repaired and pay for it , or maybe she needs to pursuade the ex by whatever means possible to give her the receipt .
