Assuming you've got your Win7PE project all downloaded, extract the above ZIP and copy the two .script files to "Projects\Win7PE_SE\Apps\System Tools" within your Winbuilder program folder. Open Winbuilder and you should see the two entries for the Apps under "Apps -> System Tools". Make sure both are ticked and then click Play to build your PE ISO.

I know it works fine building a 64bit PE within a 64bit OS (as long as it's Vista, 7 or 8) but I haven't tested under 32bit scenarios. In theory it should work as I added the necessary lines for 32bit environments.
Wow the wprime developer in our thread

Cheers for the scripts and such, but the old hardware I plan to run this on is 32-bit only. Also, I don't know if winpe can screenshot, or how I can save these screenshots (and to where?!)

Well, give it a go...as I said, the script should work just the same as I have it working currently in a 64bit environment.

You can use the Print Screen key in PE just as you can in Windows. You'll also find Paint in PE so you can paste the screenshot into that and then save it to your USB drive that you're booting PE off.

Does PE have mass storage device drivers for USB drives? Do they work plug and play?

There is a module you can enable (it's enabled by default) in Winbuilder for Win7PE that enables that.

Matt has provided me with an ISO (Big thanks to Matt! ) But wprime actually runs slower in WinPE? I get 16.8/16.9 seconds in winpe and 16.05/16.03 seconds in windows 7 with whatever background bloat happening.

Any ideas?

Is your WinPE XP based? XP is nowhere near as efficient in multithreading as Windows Vista or 7.

It's based on Windows 7.

Before i was running it on an i5 (2c/4t) which ran windows 7 as the host system. Host OS got 16s while winpe got 16.8/16.9 seconds.

I just compared winpe to a winxp safe mode machine. 148/150 seconds on an old 1c/1t celeron with winpe, 145 seconds with winxp safe mode.

Why is winpe slower?

I'm not sure about WinPE, I'm guessing either WinPE has some background load or it has some threading limitations.

I don't think threading limitations should effect the celeron with 1 core and no hyperthreading?

I'll have to ask Matt about background load. He seems to know winpe quite well.

WinPE will have less background load than the host OS, but do remember that it's pretty basic. While a normal OS has a lot of services and processes running, a lot of these are to improve the functionality of your PC. The lack of these in PE could be impeding the performance of your benchmarks.

It could just be simply a lack of drivers. If you check Device Manager in PE, are there a lot of Devices with warnings? You should be able to install the drivers for the machine manually the same way you would for any normal Windows install and then see if that improves things.

Would lack of drivers matter since I compared to XP safe mode?

I checked the driver warnings. It's audio, vga, ramdisk, and asus ai booster that's missing drivers. The ramdisk one isn't a yellow exclamation mark, it's a white question mark icon.

I'm thinking we should try an early version of winpe based on xp just to compare? Maybe it'll perform differently?

LiveXP is proving to be much more annoying to build than Win7PE :|

Since you're both going to so much trouble should the "build instructions" be hosted somewhere (including custom scripts) so that people can use a "standard" environment to benchmark?
