Default Stage Zero Timelapse Rig Test Shoot

I headed out to the middle of nowhere with TwinII and Alfonzo on Saturday just been to do a sunset shoot and do a test run with my new Dynamic Perception Stage Zero timelapse dolly.

The point of the exercise was:
  1. To get a grasp on using the rig - setup time, controller settings etc
  2. Get a bit of an understanding of appropriate intervals for timelapsing
  3. Shoot a day to night timelapse
  4. Test post-processing workflow for the sequence
  5. Hopefully come away with something to show for all the effort

This is the result of the shoot, watch in HD...

Things I learned from the shoot:
  • Get to the location an hour before you want to start shooting - the first time setup took about 30 mins including time for the other guys to run away from cows
  • Find some kind of spacer to go under the tripod head on the dolly - a bit tight with anything except a ball head
  • The movement of the dolly needed to be ramped up a bit, it only travelled about half the span. I have noted the correct settings now
  • Shoot a day to night where its cloudly for the sunset and clear for the stars... not the other way around

Post processing was done in LR4, LRTimelapse 1.9 and Premiere Pro CS6. LRTimelapse was great and very intuitive to use.
Original working file in Premiere Pro is at 4K.

Nice looking sunset.

I think you always need to spend more time setting up than you think. Getting the legs right on two tripods is a LOT harder than a single tripod. It's harder than you think setting a stable platform but spending an extra 10-15 mins setting up is much preffered to spending 2-3 hours getting the footage ( which will only last for 10 seconds ) and finding something moved slightly during the shoot

I always write down my settings, Interval, Dolly speed and with practice you get a fair idea of how fast the traverse speed need to be. Day to night is always an issue with exposures

T'was an interesting experiment. Especially to try cutting teeth on a day to night transition, from what I've been reading they are the harder types of transitions to make given the fluctuation of ambient light.

Nice work Matt - learned a few things! The stars were interesting until the clouds came! The sunset and moonset added a lot of interest. Might be better at full moon with the foreground lit up.

We'll see how it goes next time!

Nice work.
I quite enjoyed the clouds rolling in, especially the interaction between them and the moon.
What kind of post processing did you do?

Biggest suggestion would be to get something in the foreground. The dolly movement in this virtually not noticeable. To really show off the movement you need something that will move a large amount within the frame.

Otherwise, looks nice.
