Could I ask what brand of SSDs those were?

So far I've been using Intel ones, which have a reputation for being pretty solid.

Slightly off topic but what is a good free program to take a regular backup image of an SSD in case it fails?

a dvd drive and a few dvd-rw's.

i dont understand, but my ssd hasnt died yet, the worst ssd can outperform any mechanical drive in terms of speed, random read/write and durability and survival.

First one was a OCZ, second one was a Corsair... The OCZ one I bought off the for sale boards, it was a warranty replacement that had been used for 2 weeks before I got it, so I put it down to the controller issues they had... The corsair one came highly recommended at the time though, but still only lasted about 12 months... They have a 3 year warranty, but when it died I decided I CBF'd with the RMA process and sold it to my brother's friend to do the RMA...

I have backups, so I never lose any data, but it's just a pain in the arse... The boot times make SFA difference to me compared to the reliability I get...

Never had a problem with my 2 year old Intel X18-M G2, my bro has never had a problem with his Crucial M4, and my friend has never had a problem with his two year old Intel X25-M G2. I don't know anyone else IRL who uses an SSD.

You're basically saying you bought a Daewoo and a Kia and youre suprised you didn't get German reliability out of them?

You bought 2 known shitty brands that half the internet was bitching about for constant failures with.

And they died.

I'm shocked.

I'm also writing a letter to my member because the sky is blue.

That much storage, with no SSD?

Good solid build otherwise, have fun with it!

Law of averages says this will happen to some people.

I'm sure there are customers out there who have bought hundreds of SSDs and had none die.

Are you always such an asshat? Or only when someone has a view hat differs to yours...

Seriously, you at quite possibly the most arrogant, self-righteous, arsehole that I have encountered online...

My opinion is that SSD's are a waste of money, if that challenges your belief system so badly that you need to reply in such an aggressive, smarmy and arrogant way, you clearly hav some serious mental health issues... Get help!

Like pretty much everyone else in this thread, I disagree with you. And that's because you're wrong.

You have some kind of grand delusion that your experience is the norm, and it's not. Several people have told you why, yet you continue to be obtuse about it.

SSDs from manufacturers who haven't had known and well documented problems actually have far superior return rates than traditional hard drives. Intel is quoted at 1.4%. Which is downright amazing for a failure rate.

The only real concern with SSDs is the NAND write limit, which in desktop use shouldn't be seen for 5-7 years on the cheaper units on the market (special cases excepted).

The productivity benefit for *anyone* in amazing, with the only people who really don't benefit being those who have a terminal/virtual desktop server based work load. The damage to a train of thought having to wait for an application to load more than 10-15 seconds is considerable, let alone when you save or do some other disk activity based function.

There hasn't been a revolutionary upgrade to pc computing like solid state in terms of before/after in a long time. Maybe when we switched from Valves to Transistors.
