Default Playing AVI files on PS3

Ok, so I went to play some AVI files on my PS3 off my USB. Wouldn't play. (Couldn't even see the files) However when I stuck a DVD in with the same content, it worked no problem. (Can't play any AVI off the USB)

Here it lists AVIs as compatible files

Can anybody help me out?

Cheers

does the USB have any of the pre installed software a lot of them have or a hidden partition that might be confusing the PS3? Also i often have to explore/browse all files/similar command that i cant remember off the top of my head for some external HDDs that show no compatible files.

I don't think it has any hidden software. I just tried some MP3's aswell, and none of them worked.

Did you press the Triangle button and tell the PS3 to show all files on the USB stick? By default the PS3 looks for a VIDEO folder only.

Now that you can see the files, if you copy them locally to the HDD, do they play now?

It wasnt an issue of them playing. It was an issue of actually seeing them

On a stick yes. The stick I was using is still fucked. Doing a full format right now.

But yeah, the files are visible. Thanks for the help.

You could always download PS3 Media Server and stream the videos to the PS3. If both PC and PS3 are wired to the same router there will be more than enough speed to view videos without a problem.

that would be the first thing to check if the USB is formatted as FAT32 and not NTFS.

I'm trying to do it so that I don't need to leave both systems on at once. The PC is loud and a power hog. (Although moving it into the loungeroom tomorrow)
