i can see this going well with pc trouble shooting..

Tech: So Mrs Noob, what email program do you use now? Outlook or Outlook?
Mrs Noob: ¿qué?
Tech:

I have done the switch, just logged in via outlook.com.

Looks the same as it did before the switch, just now a white and blue theme.

so what about email addresses?

ocau @hotmail.com is the same as ocau @outlook.com?

Since it was just a rebranding and they wanted a name that the majority of Windows users are familiar with, Outlook is not a bad choice. Confusing though.

If this was a new application/website and they called it Outlook then the marketing department should be shot.

brand new app built from the ground up.

it was easier to build an entirely new service than to modify the existing hotmail service apparently.

I like it. Looks very clean and seems to function well.

I use hotmail as my email for all round general use where it doesn't bother me what emails i get there and gmail for important stuff. Helps keep the important things separate.

The renaming Hotmail to Outlook is a bit confusing but makes sense to join them under one branding. For tech support unless you offer web based access to Outlook then you can always distinguish it that way.

What I have read its not a revamped Hotmail, but a new email that's been built to compete with Gmail/Google apps. So if that's the case then calling it outlook.com, makes sense. If you want to try to steal people away from Google then calling it something that the avarage person already knows is a good idea. Everybody knows outlook, so now you have windows offering a 'cloud' email service to compete with google, and I sure it will intergrate with office360.

I've been using it today. I absolutely love it. Couldn't stand Hotmail at all and the revamped hotmail that appeared few years ago was rubbish.

But new Outlook > GMail...

Slowly migrating stuff over (contacts etc) and have current Gmail loading directly into my @outlook.com email.

yeah I really like it. I'm moving all my gmail accounts across to it. Will probably keep them as a backup though.

Plus because I got in early I got <firstname>.<lastname>@outlook.com

I also love the alias thing. I created an alias that i will use on sites that I know will send spam. Once that alias gets put on a spam list, I'll simply remove it and make another one

Wasn't going to have a look, but when I considered the option of finally getting my name in an email address, wandered over, and am now set up!

I'll be using this from now on.
