Smile New to OCAU, wanting some advice

hey guys here is the deal, i recently gained employment at scorpion technology and have kinda gone part crazy haha, either way i bought a whole system and put it together myself which isn't an issue, but then decided that seeing as i move my case around a fair bit (eg. lan parties, mates places etc) i would prefer a smaller case.

the original build is as follows: 3570k cpu, 16gb Vengeance 1600mhz ram 4x4gb, H80 WC, Sabertooth z77 mobo, EVGA GTX670 graphics, Corsair ax850 psu, Sandisk 120gb SSD, WD black 2tb HDD, Phantom 410 full size tower.

the curent build that i am using is: 3570k cpu, 16gb G.skill Ares 1600mhz ram 2x8gb, ASRock Z77E-ITX mobo, EVGA GTX670 graphics, H80 WC, Corsair ax850 psu, Sandisk 120gb SSD, WD black 2tb HDD, BitFenix Hydra Pro fan controller (with all the case fans and the H80 fans replaced with Spectre pro red LED fans) Prodigy black Mini ITX case.

Now, the issue that i am having is that i am able to overclock the CPU (3570k) to about 4.2 and have it sit at about 70~ degrees under full load, but if i try to go even the smallest over that clock speed the temps go up dramatically. any advice?

the next problem is obviously i have parts left over from the other system build that i did eg. the mobo, case and ram. would it be worth selling the case and getting a mid size tower and finish the building the system? or isn't it worth it?

thanks madengineer,

i have of course tried remounting, although good suggestion anyways.

i have also tried redoing the thermal paste a couple of times with different brands and different ways of applying the paste.

Welcome to the forums!

The thing with IVY is that you hit a wall when OCing. The temps just skyrocket. That's the OC potential of your chip my friend.

Also, what RAM have you got? I'd be interested in 2x4GB 1600MHz CL9 sticks.

Ivy bridge chips do heat up a bit when applying volts, what volts are you using for 4.2??? I have an Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 (bigger brother of yours), I am running my 3570K at 4.5Ghz at around 60c @ 1.2V, if I push to 4.7 on air then it jumps to 90+ this is because Intel decided to use Tim under the IHS rather then solder like they did with Sandy.

That being said, what are you after for an overclock, 4.2 is very respecable and you should be able to achive that on most Ivy chips without changing voltage some can be undervolted.

I recommend that you use offset voltage, turn off power saving features and you can play with CPU PLL (dropping this from 1.8 default to 1.6 does reduce heat).

There is a comprehensive Asrok overclocking guide here http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/s...asrock-edition

Less phases does not equate to less stability, it is consistency of power delivery that has the effect, more phase are used to compensate for spikes (they absorb the spikes and release smoother power), look at what Asus has been doing lately they have reduced phases and gone digital to provide smoother power, the Asrok ITX will overclock pretty well as it uses High rated Gold Caps, 6 + 2 Power Phase Design which is been proven to deliver smooth power.

Given he has chosen prob arguably the best 850w power supply (massive overkill by the way) I expect he should be able to overclock very smoothly ans my experience with Ivy tells me he should hit between 4 & 4.5 without too much issue, and at lower volts then Sandy.
