Default Speakers "buzzing".

Hey all,

Got this issue and it's getting to the point that I swear it gives my headaches.

Just a slight buzzing from my speakers, not really audible when music etc is playing but I still know it's there and can pick it up.

Buzzes on all channels, so it must be a speaker/power issue. Coming from my search efforts.

Running a set of Edifier S730 via my ASUS Xonar Essence STX.

Say it were a power related issue is there some way to filter it?

Running a Eaton Powerware POD+ 8 port Surge Protector.

2 LCDs, computer, 7800N, speakers and a home phone charger/dock.

Thanks in advance

Do you have any power cables running near/past your soundcard in your case?

Also does it make the same buzzing if you use onboard sound

Yeah buzzing from both sound cards, bought the card hoping to fix the issue seeing how it's fully shielded apparently.

The only power cable near it is the required power cable to power the sound card.

i think they mean power cables near the cable connecting the speakers to your sound card

here's some simple tests:
unplug them from pc - check if buzzing
plug into another device close to where the soundcard is (eg phone, ipod, etc) - check if buzzing
turn pc off while in ipod - check if buzzing
move sound source cable away from other stuff - (you guessed it) check if buzzing

this will help determine the cause - but chances are the sound cable is picking up interference from an em, field generated by anything from a fan to a power cable (even the one powereing the speakers)

if its buzzing when only the speakers are powered up, it may have internal interference, or you have the speaker volume up way too far and your pc volume is way too low

Running an external receiver? In any case, go to jaycar and grab a ground loop isolator (under car audio on their website)

Buzzes when the PC is on or off, connected via RCA cables or not.

I have my PC off the floor on a small table next to my main desk, all power cables etc are under that table.

The RCA cable runs inline with the speakers power and the two LCD power cables, well close enough in line. So may be that?

Would shielded RCA cables fix that?

Kind of hard to change my current set up as the room is so small I can't spread these things out.

I'll try a few more of the above tests now

I should also note the buzz doesn't get affected by volume, sound buzz at any volume.

are the rca's built into the speakers, or can you unplug them?if the speakers are making noise not plugged into anything , and there is no detachable rca cable then its either power coming up into the speakers, or interference it is picking up somehow.

try plugging it in to a powerpoint without the power board and see if it still happens

No I just use RCA cables as I'd rather use it opposed to 3.5mm audio to RCA cable. As the STX has RCA output.

I just turned everything off, unplugged it all and plugged the speakers directly into the wall with nothing connected to them. Still a buzz.

Moved the sub box a few meters too from everything just to see, still a buzz.

I also have the phone line coming up from the floor just near the sub box, also the line filter. Could it be that maybe? Just trying to cover everything.

EDIT: Also always have the PC volume on 50%, adjust volume with the speakers pod.

Buzzing or hissing? A lot of speakers will have a constant/faint hiss.

Hard to explain it, could be a hiss I guess.

Is very faint, but still annoys the absolute shit out of me.

is it a shitty cord? what happens when you disconnect the cord (at the speaker end) and turn the speakers on?

Same sound with nothing connected, just power going to the speakers.

So it must be a speaker/powering problem.

Not new, bought them in 09.

I had a tapping sound coming from my speakers and it turned out to be my wireless router...

Still have the noise with the router off or on.

Like I said previously, I've turned off everything in my room and plugged the speakers directly into the wall, still get the noise.

So it must be a hardware issue.

Any way to fix that? Can the power cable to the speakers itself be the issue? It's one of them two prong types, same as the original PSX.

I need to do something about it though..
