Default 24-70m canon lens

Looking at getting a new lens for myself and have been reading between the Canon Mk1 and the Mk2. Should I wait for the Mk2 to release or would I be better off just getting the Mk1 while I can still get them. Sry for the short post on my way to work and typing on this phone is horrible.

Alot of my friends and websites praise the Mk1 which is the reason for my question.

Why? The 24-70 is f2.8 - and a very nice lens.

Why not? The OP has given us nothing to go on.

The Mk1 is a great lens, as you've already read.
The thing that stands out for me is that even when using f/2.8 it's freakin sharp!
Sharper than probably any other Canon lens you own.

Personally, I would always chose the 24-70 2.8 over the 24-105 f/4.

Now, do you wait for the Mk2?
Well, for the massive price increase, I think you'd be better off getting the Mk1.

Unless you're using a 5DMk3, you probably wont even notice the better sharpness and if you need to ask if you should get the Mk2 or Mk1, I can be pretty confident you shouldn't be paying the extra $1000 for the Mk2.

Pick up a Mk1 on here for $1100ish and you'll be happy!

OP has at least given his two lens options. Not sure why you'd throw a third in there.

If you wait until after the MKII has been released, you will still be able to pick up MKI lenses second hand. If the MKII is a huge improvement over the MKI, then there will be a few bargains available. If not, then there won't.

Im in the same boat. Upgraded from crop to full-frame. Had both the canon 18-55 and the 70-200 mk2.

In the end my decision was to wait for the 24-70 mk2 and check the reviews before chosing. Picked up the sigma 50 f1.4 as an interem lens.

Oh... shooting on the 5dmk3. Brilliant bit of kit

Whichever you choose to go with, it's smart to delay your decision until the MK2 is widely available. Doing so will drive MK1 and MK2 prices down as people ditch their old lenses and stores compete for business.

Waiting until a single person has used the new lens will probably help to form an opinion of the Mk2.

Thanx for your replies, I will be using the 24-70 for children/newborn studio sessions. I will be using it with a canon 5d mk2.
Im getting impatient and cant wait to buy one. Does anyone know what we are looking at for price with the mk2 lens??

I know you have your heart set on a 24-70, but have you considered an 85/1.8 or 100/2.0 (or even both)? They'd be cheaper, (even if you buy both) and just as sharp.

And I think they would be a better length for newborn/children.

kinda in the same situation. why not the tamron 24-70mm f2.8?

It's is a hell of a lot cheaper (around $1100 from a number of sites) and for all intents and purposes it's as sharp as the canon 24-70mm f2.8 mk1 but with VC.

Am I right in this evaluation or is the canon 24-70mm f2.8 that much sharper?

The issue comes down to if you are making money from Photography. If you are, then get a Canon, as you will have less issues down the line, and if there are problems you just take everything to Canon and they sort it out. This is especially true if you end up having focus calibration problems between lens can camera.

Hi All,

I previously had a 24-70 F2.8 Canon that was stolen from me

Now I have a new 5D mark3; this came with the Canon 24-105 F4.

After one week with the 24-105 I was really frustrated not being able to atleast get to F2.8. In Tokyo were I live now I actually tried to buy another Canon 24-70 F2.8 but I could not find one anywhere.

After hunting around I brought the Tamron 24-70 F2.8; I must say I am very happy with the lens so far.
Definitely the build quality is not as good as the Canon Pro series, but in terms of image quality I currently think it is better than the Canon 24-70 mark1.
But obviously I expect it will be beaten when the Canon 24-70 mark2 comes out.
