Default Massive Vdroop on 3930k?

gday

just learning to overclock this thing, have no idea. anyway am trying to get 4.2ghz stable, so i set 1.27v in the BIOS. in windows, it reports 1.24v .. and while running CPU-Z if i launch Prime95 then it drops to 1.21-1.22v max and eventually i get BSOD

Have you set the LLC in the bios? Otherwise known as load line calibration.
Try setting it to turbo, then go from there. From what i have read, it does sound like your volts are a bit high. But set the llc first, then try lowering volts, or upping the multi

yep sorry should have mentioned, was getting those readings with Vcore LLC on High.

will try it on turbo and see how it goes. theres heaps of new shit in these boards i dont fully understand.

now the IMC and VTT have LLC controls as well as their own voltage options, i dont even know where to start there.

haha all i've done now is turn XMP on so my RAM runs @ 2133 and left everything else stock. OC's itself to 3.8ghz, thats enough for every day use. will mess around with overclocking later.

No no no no. You don't build a system like that and not overclock it.
Here read this. http://www.overclock.net/t/1189242/s...9-overclockers
I promise if you read it properly, even print it out so you have it with you, it won't take long at all. Be warned though, it becomes strangly addictive.

And again, it is really easy!

Very possibly with Sandy Bridge, runs fairly cool and doesn't take too much to get to 4.5 either.

Add more load line calibration or/or increase your voltage setting until you get your desired load voltage (in CPU-Z). load voltage is what counts (unless you're trying to save power at idle, but if you were presumbly you would be using offset voltage). Anyway, 1.22v won't be enough to go much past 4 GHz.

Also with overclock with that motherboard make sure you are using the latest BIOS and have some airflow over the motherboard else this happens: http://youtu.be/9-QALLfb2cE?t=3m46s

I cbf explaining fully, but when you set the voltage in BIOS you're setting a sort of reference voltage, actual voltage will usually be lower unless you use LLC.

LOL that above video is so sus man, really. Who just films their mobo up until the exact point the mosfets start burning?

Anyway you're correct about load line and you shouldn't really be overclocking high without it.

No idea but it resulted in this:

It's also good practice to cool the VRM and run the latest BIOS when overclocking with any board, practically with power hungry processors.
