Default 1st Sunrise in Spring

My partner is doing a photography course this semester as part of her degree, and part of the brief for her assignment was to shoot a landscape.
We made an early start on Saturday morning, the first day of Spring, and setup on the main lookout of above Griffith to catch the sunrise.

The two sunny shots are hers which I thought were pretty special (not least because she's been interested in photography for as long as she's been doing this course... ie a month or so), and the dark one is of her in action... before the wind blew her tripod over and snapped the lens off her D40 :/

Anyway, thought I'd share, c&c welcome

...unfortunately, it was so *bitterly* cold, I can't see us doing it again anytime soon, so I'm pleased we did get some nice shots on the day

I like it without clouds.

The first and the last would be the picks for me.

I am interested in doing some sunrise or sunset photo myself. Most likely sunset, cannot stand waking up in the early morning and feel the cold

Can you tell me whether those shot were taking with a sunset filter? Something like this http://www.tiffen.com/displayproduct...temnum=77CGSUN

There was no filters used. Possibly added a graduated ND filter effect in the processing, but there were no lens modifiers at the time of shooting.
