Default X100 Street Photography

Hey everyone,

It's been a while since I've published any photos. Mainly because lugging a 7D and lenses around everywhere is not a trivial task. Carrying an X100 on the other hand...

All of these are shot with an X100, a mixture of RAW and in camera JPEG's.
EDIT: should also note, they've gone through lightroom - they're not straight from the camera. The above statement was to point out how good the jpegs are, compared to the raws.

I'm after as much constructive criticism as you want to tell me.

#1 is more like urban landscape, than street. Not sure what the feature is, i keep being drawn to the women walking but ...?

#2 I like. Urban landscape again. Looks like it was taken in 1972 or something, not sure if that was the look you were after?

#3 colour seems washed out? Again, my eyes are drawn to the women walking towards us. The shot has an early morning feel to it which i like, even if it was shot PM.

#4 I like the lines/shape of the steps. Looks like a heavy vignette drawing our eyes to the Napoleon advert? I like the shot.

#5 nice greens and blues.

#6 looks nice and moody with those clouds.

#7 looks like someone trying to break into a taxi!!! Nice and close shot though.

.... and now for something completely different .... change it to black and white. The grass looks a mess, change to B&W to "hide" the grass and give the two seats a "nostalgic" feel.

I think most of the shots are urban landscape rather than street. i also struggle for a point of interest in most of the shots.

I'm not a film shooter, maybe i'm missing something.

5:38 here ... i'm heading out now to capture a few of my own. Keep shooting.

A few nice shots there - 4 is my favourite. Processing feels pretty inconsistent though, and a bit overdone in 5.

I really like the colour in #1, how the pink, light green, dark green, and black contrast almost in layers. I also really like #5 because of the deep green and blues.

1 is good, but i'd probably chop some off the RHS.

5 is almost good, but the huge tree trunk in the middle doesn't fit right.

Most of the rest are 'almost' sort of pictures. Some good processing, probably courtesy of x100 film modes?

I'm seeing a lot of shapes/geometry that just aren't quite nailed; some odd crops and NQR angles. 2 and 4 for example crop interesting things on the RHS, also 2 could use more sky/less road.

3 is a delete moment. 7 has poor colour balance for skin.

Thanks for the feedback, this is my first genuine attempt and photography on the street. So learning what to look for, compose too is what I'm really working on.

1. Yeah I thought the same, the sign is a bit off putting - but by cropping that out, we lose the grass on the bottom, which gives the photo a different feeling to me.

5. I'll take that on board. I didn't really do much compositionally with this photo, it was more an effort to see how much I could push the X100. The original has a very very light sky.

All lightroom, expect the B&W are x100 film modes.

Great feedback on the composition, cheers mate

I thought 3 was a deleter too, interesting a few people liked it.

7 is almost straight out of the camera, I'm going to have to go the other way - I like the colder feel of the skin. Its almost unnatural.

Cheers!

Processing is very inconsistent, treat them as individual shots rather than a set (even though I presented them in a set). I'm still learning street/urban, so I'm trying everything before I find a style that suits.

1. Urban landscape, very true. I'm not up with the genres of photography. I was intending the fountain to be the feature, but its a damn hard fountain to shoot. The light is damn near impossible to control. I like the depth in the shot from the way the sun hits the grass.

2. Exactly what I was going for.

Garden shot - interesting idea to go bw, I get what you mean about hiding the grass. I did very much like the subdued tones of the foliage though.

I think you and the other people in this thread hit on the main thing I need to work on, which is points of interest in the shots.

Thanks for all your feedback guys, reminded me of why ocau is awesome.
