Default PSU efficiency bench results

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...tZ3pZR1E#gid=0

I've been benching a lot of PSUs that I have acquired lately (much more than I actually need, lol). I'm about half way through testing them and I thought the results may be interesting to others.

No major surprises really, efficiency more or less as expected with older and lower 80+ rated PSUs not performing as well. Also, the 'sweet spot' of the PSU makes a considerable difference to the efficiency so it doesn't make sense to seriously overpower a rig at all.

Also shows how much PSU technology has improved throughout the years (or at least maybe the older PSU has degraded). Eg, the very popular 80+ HX-520 which used to cost like $150 is like 6% less efficient at Windows idle load than a modern $80 Antec HCG 520 Bronze.

Good to know, thanks for all the testing!

When do you expect to complete this experiment?

Probably in the next couple of weeks. If you have any requests of any PSU on the list I can priotize it.

I'm also building a Quad SLI GTX 480 X79 rig to stress out the 1000w+ PSUs properly

I don't have any Platinum PSUs at the moment... I bought pretty much all the PSUs secondhand.. so I probably won't come across any decently priced Platinums any time soon.

good to know my recent purchase (AX-750) is noticeably more efficient so far!

No wonder it seems quieter (less heat loss)

Thanks for the real-world comparison! Awesome work!

Question

I'm cleaning out the server room here at work, are you interested in a box of misc PSU's, both server & desktop?

I like these sorts of tests, very interesting.

The small system is very similar to mine.

Using my pico and xbox psu i get about 42 idle and 58 at cpu load. (no gfx card)

Depends what they are.. if they're really obscure stuff that you can't typically get easily then there's no point testing 5 different types.

I wouldn't mind getting a sample of a typical HP desktop PSU or something like that too. And lots of them would probably not be ATX compatible anyway.

MicroATX still uses the same ATX plug. I don't believe the brandnames customizes desktop PSU standard any more.. but it has been years so I'm not sure.

Anyway, if you're not in Brisbane its not worth shipping PSUs back and forth as they're pretty expensive.
