u can get it to repair ... basically it reinstalls all the system files, without changing any of the settings/programs

what you do is, run the install all the way until it says to you ... "this partition already has windows xp installed, press R to repair, or ENTER to continue with the installation"

then you get it to repair instead

didn't work that way, cause that file's corrupt - windows doesn't think its installed. It thought it was a copy of 98 or something - just asked to either delete it, or install somewhere else.

Ahh well, time to backup and reformat i guess.

nothing - came home today - switched on the PC and it told me it was corrupt I don't know what could've done it though, cause the PC was working fine till now, and it hadn't locked up or anything before this.

98 doesnt need an autoexec.bat or config.sys to boot.

that wont do a thing.

try deleting system.dat in the windows folder. that will screw it up.

Just today i deleted an autoexec. bat file cos it was loading stupid shit. So i just deleted it and rebooted.

autoexec.bat is usually empty in a windows98 installation, its where drivers and other startup programs go for DOS mode (sound and cdrom drivers etc).
And its easy to make one if you need one (edit autoexec.bat)
