Default Windows 2000 / IE5.5

The company I work for has just upgraded from WinNt to Win2000 - (don't laugh they still run Office97 & IE5.5).

Anyway, they seem to have locked it down tighter than a fishes bottom. I can't download any files to my HDD anymore; no .exe or .zip or anything. Any ideas how to get around this?

yes. quit your job.

they obviously have a very good reason for not wanting you to download stuff to your hdd. quite possibly it's a datacap or something.

why don't you ask the sys admin why?
i'm sure he'll gladly tell you.

Well, they haven't worried about it for the last 3 years.
I guess I just get a bit pissed off when the IT dept goes open slather, sells warez that they've downloaded & burnt on company property, listens to web radio all day and plays network games.

Yes, I probably will ask the sysadmin whats going on when it stops me from doing my job.

Its the best way to prevent any kind of destabalising effects to their software environment. I was a network administrator for a year for a small company (about 25 workstations and 3 servers) where we did the same.

It's the old saying "prevention is better than a cure"

It's just so easy with win2k server sbs. Not much fun for the users. Did myself out of a job too...

Bloody thing ran that well that my job went from full time to 2 days a week when they realised all I was doing was sitting in my office with my 3 old compaq desctop workstations and 3 servers of different "antiquity" plugging away at my MSCE components. It was great!

I wonder though, with the ability to do remote installations of SOE's and pretty competant server software,(for M$ anyway,) with the ability to reduce the work pc experience to less than mundain... are we doing ourselves out of jobs..

Don't get me wrong, its still has many faults but it DRAMATICALLY reduced my workload. And I though I was top shit, slick mofo come in and recommend 2 new servers a shitload of software and some serious weekend overtime...

I used to sit in my office downloading shit and surfing porn, now I don't have an office..

Default unbelievable

Not only can't you download......
You can't do File / New / Window because of "restrictions placed on this computer".
Can someone explain why opening a new IE window would cause problems?
