Default Internet Gateway...

I have a 2 comp LAN between my comp and my brothers, we share one dialup internet connection with a proxy. The problem is my comp has to be on for him to access the internet, of course, so i was thing of making/getting an old comp for an internet gate way.

What would you guys reccommend for hardware and software running the gate way? celeron 400?

400MHz would be heaps, if you use linux. Some to check out are:

Smoothwall
Freesco
Linux Router Project
PicoBSD

There's many, many more.

Hell, 120mhz is overkill for my linux server, and it's running DNS as well. You can get away with pretty much any distribution (should be able to get a copy of Redhat 7/7.1/Debian at any newsagents for $15 or so), just read the IP-Masq tutorial at Linuxdocs and you're set.

Smoothwall will do all you want and is simple and straightforward.

I run it on a Pentium 75, 16mb ram etc has been up for about 65 days now without a hiccup. I use dial up with Dingoblue and its almost the perfect combination

I'm just running a P166@233MHz (MMX) as my server/router... Under W2K... & she only takes ~40 hours to crunch a SETI unit!

Ive tried most of the above, and ive been slightly dissapointed

I looked at LRP .. couldnt get my head around all the distros.. besides, I needed something I could transfer via floppy and didnt need compiling on an existing linux bos

hence I went with:
freesco
which is GOOD.. damn easy to setup.. but I found it had some stability issues.. various things from one NIC dieing (with TX RX errors) to things like Memory fault and odd messages appearing all over the screen.. trying to refresh a gamespy server list on a box connected through it was usually enough to bring the net down (but not the box)
I still use it.. reboot occasionally.. I cannot use it for lan parties.. its too unstable..

so I tried smoothwall.. apart from the dramas i had trying to get it to use the OTHER nic as the green interface (I ended up removing one for install) it only worked for a short amount of time before killing the green interface?!

most of this was on a p120 / 16mb

What kind of NIC is causing you grief with freesco? You may have to install the extra module from the freesco site, which i believe will enable support for other NICs. Although, it almost looks like you have hardware problems, considering you had issues with both freesco and smoothwall. Also, you might consider moving your freesco to your HDD, if possible, so you can enable some swap - although 16MB should be fine for most of the native freesco services. For what it's worth, my freesco was very stable over a period of 3 or 4 months, when i was running it with only 8MB of ram and an AMD ~100MHz. Don't be afraid to simply raw-write another floppy and start again, either

oh yeh, if you don't observe correct syntax when entering stuff into the setup program you can cause all types of really weird problems.

Also, make sure you check the log file, in /var/log - it might give you a clue as to whats up.

I use Smoothwall on a dial up connection, I am not too sure how mature the cable/dsl support is. Never really looked into it.

But I got mine running first go and its been running flawless since. It serves it's purpose anyway

I believe gamespy is mentioned in chapter 7 of the IP-masq howto. Chapter 7 is here and they talk about the Gamespy problem in chapter 7.2. I think there may be a separate document that gives you a bit more detail converning the solution. I can't find it at the moment but the above should be a start.

I've got Smoothwall running on a P166 , Easiest thing I have ever installed and set up, just boot from the CD and follow the bouncing ball from there...

'member to get a monitor and keyboard or if you plan to run windows maybe you could get a way with PC Anywhere and a UPS... (so you don't have to do headless reboots after every power outage)

That's a pain in the arse coz sometimes they dont come back up or prompt you for something. UPS's rock my world. The modem looses power in a blackout but the Smoothwall box simply redials the moment the modem powers back on.
