Default The Dell XPS 15 (9550) - Everything you ever wanted?

Hi all,

I can't express my excitement for this device. After being loyal to Windows for the last 20 years- I was fed up with the bulkiness, low quality, and bad battery life in PC laptops. I was hours away from biting the bullet, and buying a MacBook pro retina 15". Then came across this device.

This is the ultimate laptop. IMO, it is the peak of laptops- size/form-factor wise- you can't get any smaller (15.6). The power is incredible (yes, there are more powerful GPU's).

And no, I don't work for Dell, I'm just so glad I have some fuel against the masses of Apple!

Specs:
  • i5 i6300HQ (Skylake)
  • GTX 960M
  • 15.6" FHD Matte/QHD touch
  • 54Whr batt. (11hrs) OR 86Whr batt (17hrs)*
  • 10mm-17mm thin!
  • 357mm wide, 235mm deep
  • 1.78KG

*86Whr batt. replaces area for 3.5" Sata drive- ie can only fit an SSD.

They're releasing a "Developer" edition (aka Precision 5510).

Inside the XPS 15

Fingers crossed the reviews are good. And the charger/adapter is small

What do you all think?

How realistic is a 17 hour battery?

Is this a real challenge for the Macbook Pro?

What will you do with yours?

My plan- Windows (for games/photoshop), OSX when people figure out the Intel 530/Skylark gpu for OSX (for X-code/iOS), Linux (dev)

The charger/adapter size (very important to me). Not looking too bad.

They really need a FHD Matte Touch screen option.

Touch matte displays don't seem to be around much.

I'm super pleased there is a Matte 1080p option. Can't stand gloss.

IIRC, the Surface book is only 13.5"? Any word on the GPU in there is? Rumours- but I heard it was a underclocked 950m

Looks average at best compared to the surface book.

Based on what criteria?

They both look pretty amazing to me.

I've been waiting for this but you can only get it with a 256GB SSD. I would have bought one today if they could have provided 512... Out of interest, the salesperson on chat quoted me $2400

not sure if you're serious or trolling...

- 'real' CPU (4 cores) not dual core ultrabook class - will be super useful for vmware/hyper-V
- 'real' gaming class GPU - 960M not a spiced up 940M (1gb VRAM lololol)
- 1k less price
- size/weight is a wash - its bigger / heavier sure but its 15" screen so what do you expect

- downside: doesn't convert to a tablet. When I had a SP2, I was using it as a laptop 80-90% of the time, and quickly came to the conclusion might as well use a proper laptop. And who doesn't have an ipad/droid tablet lying around for couch/bed surfing?

There is no way I could justify this (have a pretty decent work laptop) but if I were in the market now this is pretty much a slam dunk. Not sure if its still valid but last time I looked there was a 15% off code floating around that was valid a few days ago (saw it on cashrewards, stacks uip to 20% off counting cashrewards 5% off)

Can we whack the 15% code on top of that?

I agree about the SurfaceBook- it doesn't compare at all

I heard its a 15" screen but in more of a traditionally sized 14" body because of the very thin bezel, is that right? Which sounds like the perfect size laptop to me!
