Default Should I buy an oculus rift CV1?

From the USA via Amazon, postage is $50 AUS

$800 Full kit.

$700 no touch controllers

2 x GTX 1080s in SLI PC in chair desk bound gaming, is it worth it, or should I wait?

i bought and sold a HTC vive.

i honestly wasn't overly impressed by it. it is great fun, there was a bow and arrow mini game that comes with it that i really enjoyed. but its the lenses, i found i could really see the red, blue, green pixels like sitting in front of old school CRT monitor and it looked heavily interlaced.

really i would strongly suggest trying one first before spending the money, i will consider the 2nd gen of head sets (if the tech is still going by then) just because i think the lenses and displays just aren't quite up to scratch (just to used to 4k gaming)

There is little to no gaming content atm (mind you thr is a lot of VR porn coming through, now if that what's floats your boat and if you use it for 4-6 weeks it becomes 'a lot cheaper' than ladies of the night or trying to pick up at the pub/nightclub).

I would have concerns about the list of titles at this point in time but we can see there are some serious considerations:

If you have a Umart near you you may be able to go and try it out.

The Milton store (Brisbane's biggest Umart outlet) has 2 different VR headsets so customers can try them out - I was very impressed with how immersive it feels even just doing the demo (no gaming) and you almost get nauseous if you swing around to quickly.

You could also try out a budget set and see how it goes:

Reddit has a good list of free titles for CV1:

I bought both a Vive, and Rift (with touch). I've just sold the Vive.

While there is a long list of titles now, most in my opinion are not great. There are some real gems in there, and VR is definitely the future. If you play racing sims, or Elite Dangerous this will very likely be the single best device for you. If you're into multiplayer games, and like me don't play much SP, then you're going to burn through the decent titles quite quickly.

I very much enjoy the rift, and enjoy demoing it (and the Vive) to others, but be under no misconception, this is an early adopter's device. I still play significantly more flatscreen games.

If you like single player games (or racing) most, and have a fair disposable income, then go for it.

I play mostly car racing games, would it be worthwhile to consider?
I play at 1440p and the screen door look is something I'm concerned about.

Youtube videos look fine, because its not demonstrating screen door effect, as it can't be recorded in that manner.

Also interested in this question. I am in the process of changing jobs and plan to get myself a treat with my leave payout while putting the rest into my mortgage. The initial thought was a nice 40" 4K monitor but lately have been considering a VR headset instead. Mostly I play single player games these days and the next "big" game I am waiting for is Cyberpunk 2077 having grown up playing the original tabletop RPG (and still do).

I like the idea of testing the waters with a cardboard or even the Breton device linked above but am then concerned the non-premium device will unfairly prejudice me against it. There seems to be conflicting information out there so understand super kermit's concerns. Perhaps biting the bullet on the cheaper device is a good option and just accepting that as long as it is "good enough" then a better device will be, well, better.

Those starting to also pose the question of whether to buy or not should review the thread, it can be noted that the OP (super kermit) has already posted there:

You will get a lot more informed and insightful responses I bet.

Any male that buys that sort of construct 'wouldn't care' - that is they have money and are sociologically awkward or 'flat out burnt' and they don't give a f%$k zone:

I just went to that link and clicked on the video at the top of the page, with the guy looking really weird but apparently enjoying himself in his sex suit.

The video stopped after maybe 10 seconds, and cut to an ad. Among the first couple of sentences in the ad, a woman was talking about seeing a doctor who recommended a colonoscopy.

I have to say, this did not make me desire the suit. Perhaps Google (or whoever placed the ad) needs to look at targeting their ads a little better

Back on topic.. I've tried 3D cinema, it doesn't work for me. Everything is just fucking weird with 3D glasses over my normal glasses, and of course 3D cinema looks like crap without 3D glasses. I have a 3D 4K TV with 3D glasses but I've never actually tried finding any 3D titles to play on it, because the supplied glasses don't fit over my glasses.

The thought of car racing in 3D appeals to me, a lot. My question I guess is will the 3D things fit over my glasses properly, and will the 3D effects still work properly, which they just don't at the Cinema?
Not using my glasses is just not an option unfortunately.
