First up I have a GT Palomar MTB with crappy Sync Forks,
its really big because it was supposed to last me forever! I think its a 21" frame(or wheel size ) or close to it. The seat isnt extended and is level with the handle-bars. I am just over 6 ft tall.I have been reading up on how to do Bunny Hops, but I just cant get the rear wheel up! I know im supposed to use the peddles as a lever but I dunno! I just cant do it!! Is it cos my bike is soo big?(I blame it any way). Some good easy to understand advice would be great! Also with wheelies, i just got back into trying them cos im finally able to feel comfortable on my big bike. I can get the bike in the air easily enough, ride with it for two peddle turns then im either vearing off to one side or the other or I fall down or fall back too much. Tips?? One last thing, I wanna get into XC racing, is my current sized bike too big? or just right? Thanks NHD Last edited by NHD; 7th September 2001 at 10:38 PM. |

it's probably 21" high.. most wheels are 26" or 24" if you wanna look sick..
for bunnyhop, you level the pedals, like 3'oclock, and 9'oclock.. then jump down on the pedals.. so you spring up.. u gotta be sort of standing up, not sitting on seat.. so you spring with legs.. and pull up a little with your arms. with the feet i think you try to flick them back a little too.. hope it helps with ya i cant do wheelies so cant help you there=) for racing, it's more about skill than the bike. actaully riding is more about skill than the bike... just practice alot, so you be comfortable with bike and waste the wankers who have ultra expensive bikes who cant do shit coz they think they'll damage their bikes.. my friend is sort of like that=) i trash my bike.. a service is imminent... |

Without toeclips, i can bunnyhop almost a foot hight
![]() /end wank It takes a LONG time to perfect it, everyone has their own style, you have to develop your own With a big bike, your gunna have problems, it'll be heavy and hard to move around, plus your position might not suit bunnhops To practise, find a soft grassy patch, or if you sleep with a brick for a pillow, do it on your driveway Ride around, you have to get used to the movements, maybe lower your seat a bit first to get it out of the way your body is like a spring, you have to preload it to lift the bike the first movement is lifting the front wheel.... ride slowly, walking speed, and practise lifting the front wheel off the ground without pedalling, and balancing it (manual) you have to get your weight back, and wrench it up, but keep an emphasis on smoothness, you dont want to come crashing back to earth too hard the 2nd movement, ride around again, and try lifting your rear wheel by just using your feet... no brakes, its a bitch to do, but you have to get used to preloading your body, then using the pedals as levers, you get your weight forward, push your feet back and up on the pedals really hard to explain... but yeh, you have to be able to lift the rear wheel with only your body The actual bunnyhop is a combination of these 2 movements, you lift the front wheel, whilst pushing your weight back and lifting the rear wheel, just practise practise etc... watch a few others do it find a friend that can do tricks, and get their help, it makes sense when explained in person Remember, you need smoothness, no point bunnyhopping a metre high if you crash when you land! i wish i had a digi camera to show the movements and how to practise those moves goodluck, and Dont break a leg!

Would be good to learn how to do it BMX style.... but as soon as you move to toe-clips or clipless pedals and shoes youll never look back. Ive had clipless pedals for a long time now and HATE riding anything without them.
With them though, i can get 20-25cm bunnyhops quite easily. Just go buy a cheapie set of toe-clips and use those. The only problem is that to do decent hops with them, sometimes you have to tighten them up when you start riding so your feet dont slip out. You can prolly guess of the possible accidents that could happen tho if you did then want to get out of them quickly. But its how i first learnt. Either way you want to learn how to do it, do learn cos its a very very handy thing to know how to do. Esp in rough terrain situations where objects (logs, etc) can appear from nowhere. Being able to do decent height bunnyhops save saved my neck many times.

I used to ride with toe-clips, then clipless
but now, the stuff i do is too stupid, and have to bail when things get hairy ![]() and its NOT pretty trying to bail with feet locked in! especially when mucking about, trying new tricks then again, hitting something hard and launching off the bike 'cause ya foot slipped is not good either, especially at high speed Once you learn to hop without toeclips, it opens up alot of possibilities for your riding style, instead of lifting the bike as one, you can approach gutters/rocks with front wheel in the air, and lift rear wheel only when needed, at very last minute and similar when wheely-ing, bunny hop something, keep the front up and wheely off |

Do you have barends on the bike? if you do, use them to get used to the 'feel' they are alot easier to get leverage, once you get used to them, then you can get used to it alot easier by using the regular handle grips.
cheers. |
