Be very careful installing beta versions of DirectX, as it can royally screw up your system. Stick with the official 8.0a for now, if you want to be safe.

It's a Microsoft beta. That means they don't claim that it's reliable or stable.

I'm staying away.

I was using it for 3 weeks. it was actually already leaked at the end of May. It's faster than 8.0a, I got better results in 3DMark 2001 in particualr in high resolutions with my GF3. The problem was that some games did not recognize 8.1 as a proper DirectX, even 2Dmark2001 would not run anymore after a while, I got a message: you should use a DirectX compatible card (I have a GF3). So, I had to reinstall the stuff. As usual that is nothing for Newbies. I also heart from beta BBS that the floating beta versions (there are several) are time limited (MS is not stupid).
Means one or the other day you waker up, and no Direct X anymore.
