Default TV DVD question

ok
we have jvc tv
cant remember the exact brand
and my dad is looking at buying a dvd player this week
and a speaker set later in the future

so what i need to know is what should i be looking for to use the player straight out of the box into the tv.

prob get some 5.1 spekers later in the future ( as i stated before) but this isnt essential

Being a JVC it should be ok.

Need to determine what audio/video connections the JVC has

DVD will output via Composite(RCA Connector) or Svideo(Mini DIN Plug).

So the TV needs to have an equivalent input. More than likely it has Composite only. But if it has Svideo even better, the biggest jump in video quality is going from composite to Svideo.

Next you need to determine where the audio is going to be plugged into.

The DVD player will have analog audio outputs in the form of a stereo pair of RCA connectors.

It will either have digital output via coaxial or optical which you will need in future for the full 5.1 audio setup.

If your wishing the TV to do it, it must have stereo audio inputs(RCA Connectors).

If your TV doesn't have audio inputs or they are mono then I suggest trying to move up the purchase of the audio component of your new system.

Hope that helps in some way..

If it has a component video input then that's definitely a bonus! What I want to know is the quality produced via Component Video Input better than that of S-video?

The step up from Svideo to Component or RGB is one where the noticeable difference isn't as dramatic.

From my own personal experiences(ie: viewing tv/dvd in this configuration) the picture is a tiny bit soft as opposed to the sharpness of Svideo. The colours however are a lot more vibrant than Svideo can reproduce.

I just wish Panasonic made a R4 player with RGB output for my damn Loewe

ok the jvc tv has

inputs/outputs

S/video-1
s-video input ( 4 pin mini DIN)
videp input rca
audio L/R

Video 2 &3

video input rca
audio L/R input rca

nothing on digital
so i assume if we wish to do 5.1 in future we need to find an
amplifier or such thing to do this for us??

buy urself a dvd drive with svideo output (most have this) and a digital output for a future reciver.

for now hook up the dvd drive into the tv and use the 2rca (red and white) for audio

later u can unplug these two rca's and use a digital cable from the dvd drives SPDIF output into a new reciver

when u buy a reciver make sure that it has the same inputs as ur dvd drive outputs (ie if ur drive outputs SPDIF via only an optical signal, make sure ur reciver accepts optical)

The mod for the RVA-31 is already out.

The mods for the RVA-41 and RVA-71 are under development at the moment.

Virtually all dvd players can be modified for region free usage, there is no reason to buy one of the dodgy ass chinese players..

Yup, true...but keep in mind that once a DVD player is modified the warranty is voided!
