Default SerialATA Hard Drives to arrive soon!

Everyone has probably heard of SerialATA by now. At the moment, you can only get Fujitsu HDD for laptops and expensive Seagate Barracuda V 120gb SATA HDD. But after reading an article here about an 80gb Barracuda model, I immediately rang up my local store and asked if they had them in stock. They said to expect these to arrive within two weeks.

Also Serial ATA HDD's are cheaper to make than Parallel ATA drives. This means SATA drives can be priced competatively with ATA100 drives.

So the Seagate Barracuda V 80gb SATA should be about $200, only slightly more than it's ATA100 brother. The 120gb SATA version is still about $400 while the ATA100 is $380.

Red face Hmm..

From what I've seen it's a dodgy adapter kinda like a dongle or something. It appeared a couple of issues ago in Atomic.

The Abit nForce 2 board comes with Parallel to Serial ATA adapters, dubbed 'Serillel'. But the SATA HDD the will probably run at 133mHz, not 150mHz.

That was for running PATA hdd's using the SATA controller.

You can get SATA PCI cards so you can controll SATA drives if your motherboard doesn't have a controller onboard.

you find that alot of the earlier mobos and pci cards that claim SATA support are just useing SATA->PATA converters, and these just can't give good performance.

yeah i question the performance a PCI could offer

is it
1) runs the HDD as fast and effiecient as an onboard SATA controller can

or

2) its just a converter so you can use a SATA HDD but performs the same as a PATA 100/133 drive ???

they are faster...not really sure by how much. and the cable are a hell of a lot smaller. (better case airflow!!)

what is a bit interesting is that Seagate are the only Company releasing SATA Drive's in Australia at all. are other companies refining their technology? or just waiting to see how SG's fare in the market?

8-Mbyte cache buffer
This has got to help, and with the price being the same I reckon that SATA has to be the way to go for now.

I'll be in the market for a new mobo with SATA. Just wish EPOX would release a nForce 2 delux board with it. Otherwise It will be ASUS.

They are not faster. The only performance increase is not worth the extra money. The 8MB buffer is nothing new. WD have had it in one of their lines of HDDs for a while now, with the performance increase being marginal.

Airflow? So what, you can take the side of your computer and get better air flow, and it doesnt cost an extra $50.

EDIT: Typo.
