USB 2.0 scanners are now around. How much faster is a USB scanner compared to 1.1?
Canon has a D1250U2 ~$180 USB 2.0 and the blerb says "upto four times the data rate" What does this mean in real terms? If it takes 30 secs for an A4 page to be scanned in USB 1.1 - how long would it take with USB 2.0 using same A4 sheet? I plan to do losts of archiving and am trying to see if USB 2.0 is worth it? |

let me tell you for certain (without having real stats/data to back it up) USB scanning devices have been a waste of time until now. i've read some reviews and stuff and it would appear the HP and canon usb2 scanners are quality products.
someone who has more experience may be able to extrapolate or correct... ![]() edit : sorry, until now usb scanners have been a bit too slow. but usb2 devices are good, very good (compared to usb1)

but the data will be sent to the computer faster. btw, USB2 is 40 times faster than USB1, not 4 times. USB1 = 12mbps USB2 = 480mbps

Scanning Speed- USB 2.0 Colour 4msec/line (600dpi), 8msec/line (1200 dpi) USB 1.1 Colour 16msec/line (600dpi), 32msec/line (1200dpi) How many "lines" to a A4 page- this will not be lines of text! This suggests that the scanner does actually scan faster, but whether this means an A4 piece of paper is actually done 4 times as quickly as some of the cycle may not be taken up with scanning. |

In regard to scanner speed....I bought my first scanner in 1996 for $350 US; a Mustek MFC-600s (SCSI). I used this scanner until late last year when I purchased my new system.
I replaced it with a Visioneer One Touch 7100 USB for $79 US. Let me tell you.....speed-wise, there is no comparison. The pre-scan is lightening fast and the scan itsself it faster too. Takes about 20-25 seconds to scan a photo.... It may not be the best scanner in the world but the price was right and its does what I want it to do.... Visioneer OneTouch 7100 USB flatbed scanner

Just a little USB 2.0 caveat from Intel:
Currently, the USB Specification, Revision 2.0, covers three speeds 480 Mbps, 12 Mbps, and 1.5 Mbps. The term "Hi-Speed USB" refers to just the 480 Mbps portion of the USB Specification. We now use the term "USB" to refer to the 12Mbps and 1.5Mbps speeds. Last edited by Ambush; 28th January 2003 at 11:02 AM. |
