Hmmmm

For that to work you would probably need 10 level displays with 8 leds and 10 bandpass? filters of varying ranges on the input side of the level displays. Some one here with a little better knowledge of electronics would know how to put this all together; but

20-60 hz filter, accepts all freqs 20-60 hz, rejects rest ---> led VU meter = 20-60 hz display
60-200 hz filter, as above but 60-200hz, ---> led vu meter = 60-200 hz display,
and so on up to the frequency top end you want to measuer e.g. 16,000 hz.

Thats one way of doing it...
But any way you do it, it is quite a hard thing for anyone to make by hand.
Your talking about 80 leds... soldering those onto a PCB so they are flat alone is quite a hard task.

that'd look nice... wouldn't mind one with about 40.... 80 sounds like too much work

If you want something off the shelf - how about:

$189 @ Gamedude.
