Hello, just looking to get another 80Gb HDD for my PC, already have a Seagate but its getting pretty full. Just wondering if I should get another Seagate or try something different?

Ive got an 80gb Barracude IV, I have found it to be a very good drive. Quiet and reliable. If I was to get another, it would be another one

OK, it's just have seen a Maxtor 80Gb which is only $3.00 more expensive just wondering if it is better than the Seagate.

I have heard good things about the WD with 8Mb cache, but I dont know if it would be worth paying $40 more than Seagate for it

I can get one from the IT Warehouse for $189 and it's only a couple of minutes away.

So another Seagate is definately the way to go?

My primary pc has a Seagate Barracuda IV 80gb drive , and my mothers has the same drive but it's capacity is 20gb - both drives run flawlessly , but I am going to try a WD 80gb with 8mb of cache next.

The only things I don't like about the Barracuda's that we both own are they take one heck of a long time to 0 fill and twice as long to format in comparison to other drives that I have owned and currently use.

The WD's are a bloody good drive by all accounts. However, I would still choose a Seagate, because of my record with them. Not one dead drive (aside from that old one I dropped) in ten years. One Seagate is currently being used in the firewall, and a new Cuda IV is in the server with a fan blowing on the drive cage (as I suspect heat may be more of an issue in modern drive failures more than manufacturing defects, aside from the DeathStars).

Various reviews peg the WD JB series (8mb cache) and IBM
120gxp series neck-and-neck faster than the Seagate.
The new Maxtor Diamondmax 9 looks interesting, but reviews
are hard to find. The Bara 4 is a cool, quiet drive with reasonable speed.

had a lot of seagate drives in my time and have had very good experience with them... sure they are not the fastest, but they are quiet, cool, and reliable.

every single WD i have had (limited to 2 40gb drives... so minimal experience) have gone 'noisy' making a continuois, high pitched whine after approx 8 months, one samsung 40gb has 7mb of bad sectors just over 1.5 years old, and the last 2 maxtor drives I owned (4.3gb's) both died

my two seagate V '80gb in RAID 0 work flawlessly and perform well

Well I purchased a 80Gb Seagate, it must be a different model than my other one though, because it has a slightly different name.

I think the new seagates are the barra ATA 5 now. The barra ata 4s had a seashield over the PCB.
