Need some info on seti.
I joined seti lastnight (26th about 6:00pm) using bonic and 100% of chip, have done 7 and a half WU's in that time I think.

I would like to know howto join the OCAU seti team and how to setup the system resource share, currently at 100%, if its set to 100% is it actually using 100% of my systems resources, because I can still run everything fine, games to work as they did before I used seti. It says a few things about how the usage works but I did'nt really understand it all. should I just leave it at 100% or what?
having it set like that does'nt seem to affect anything at all.

I appreciate your offer Torgoen however if he was annoying me where he is, I could address that problem by placing all my resources at putting him behind me.
Enjoy it while you can Rob.

To join a Team, logon onto the SETI account thing, and then search for the overclockers australia team, and then there should be a button somewhere saying "join this team" or similar up the top, i think. and yes, the SETI process has a low priority, which means that almost everything else takes priority over it, so almost everything will take priority over it, and it will just go sit up the back until the CPU is free again.

So even thought it says it users 100% of the cpu all the time it is'nt?

Can someone explaine?

It has 100% resource share as set in BOINC, the client that can control SETI and many others, so that if you run for instant Climate Prediction and SETI and have them both at 50%, then they get equal time overall, or if SETI has been set to 200% and Climate Prediction to 100%, then SETI will get 200% the processing time, eg: 3hrs = 2hrs SETI, 1hr Climate Prediction.

However in windows, it set at a low priority. Everything else will start up at normal, which is higher. The levels are from highest to lowest; Realtime, High, Above Normal, Normal, Below Normal and Low.
Now SETI will run with ALL AVAILABLE cpu cycles. So if you are playing WMP10 with a DVD and that uses 30% CPU and firefox needs 5% and other taskbar programs needs 10% then all up you are using 45% of your cpu cycles, so SETI will automatically use the spare 55%. So to you, it will look like your CPU is always at 100%, but WHENEVER you need your cpu for any task, SETI will drop down its requirements to what ever is left after your other programs.

This is a great method, as it lets you to run it non stop, and when you start a game, no problem, as SETI will not interfer.

Did any of that make sense?

No offence taken (sorry didnt realise that I was sitting an english exam ).... why you ask... a number of reasons the main being that I have been rather buisy over the last month as you can see HERE with god forbid... real work, as well as spreading myself accross a number of projects, as well as not keeping client pc's upto date with the latest version... so I think I am down to about 8 active pc's... which I was about to fix today but funny that real work thing got in the way again

RobsGT4

Do you still have a Celica GT4 and do you find the parts very expensive? Someone I know in South Australia just sold his because of the cost of parts.

Also since you are obviously in the know with computers which type is better for BOINC an Athlon 64 or a Pentium 4?

If you are purchasing new, I believe that P4's are better, as long as Hyper Threading is enabled, but back at the AXP vs P4 ~1.6-2.4 area, the AXP's are far better crunchers. Also with the P4 HT vs A64, the qualifier is is HT enabled and enabled in BOINC, otherwise half the CPU is idle.

sort of on topic, but partly OT. do people want to post their stats of their machines, and how long it takes to do a WU of SETI (and any other BOINC Project except maybe CP) just to get some sort of performance indication going.
My A64 3000+ (rest of stats in sig, and also stock clock) takes around 2:30-2:40 on average.
I'll check up on my slower computers when I get home tonight.
