Via is releasing their own line of explosives? Cool.

Will it have the rock-solid dependability of a via-based motherboard?

Why does Via bother? I mean basic business sense tells you to bed down your core market (motherboard chipsets) before you diversify and try to challenge two major players like AMD and Intel in the CPU stakes.

From everything I'm reading recently, Via would do best to concentrate their R&D into developing faster AND more stable/compatible mobo chipsets.

Already people are starting to become disillusioned with Via mobos because of the raft of problems with nvidia and creative cards - not that it's all via's fault of course.

I've been lucky with my P4X266 chipset so far, but I pity those with the 686 chipsets...problems galore.

Just my opinion.

"playing it safe" and sticking to one market can be very dangerous. look what happened to 3dfx when they got all cocky and decided to stick with 3d *cards* (as opposed to chipsets). along came nvidia and wiped them out.

now nvidia are doing teh smart thing and diversifying into different markets that are fairly low risk, due to their previous technologies.

the via CPUs are not designed for gamers by any means, but that doesnt mean there's not a place for them. they make fantastic embedded products thanks to their low heat output (instant media/firewall/security/whatever rackmount box!) and they are fairly cheap. they make fantastic "business" machines for boring office-type number crunching etc.

I read a "brag" about these in the VIA arena forumns a while ago, from what I read VIA are going after the P4 properly, to have two lines of CPU's.

Apparently (from reliable sources) the C3's are still to ramp up to 1Ghz and are to attain SMP capabilities. Imagine the server densities you could get running 10W processors, there would be some real energy savings there to with a lot less cooling required.

I might pop over there now and see if anything has developed

C3 - Cool Processing

C4 - Explosive power?

It's just a shame the C3's processing power is o poor. I mean, yes it would be great to run dual C3's on a mobo that don't require heatsinks, but even two of them can't compete with a Celeron at the same clockspeed. When you get a dual CPU system, you want at least some horsepower behind it. That's the only thing Via really needs to improve with it's next generation CPU.

I run a 686 chipset and like the many clients I've supplied systems to, have no problems with the Nvidia card I use or anything else for that matter. Very stable.
