Default Palms/PDAs ... opinions?

I'm thinking of buying myself a late Xmas pressie in the form of a Palm/PDA/organiser thing. my budget isnt huge (like $300)... and i want to know ppls opionions of them.

ie can you use them to write a couple of pages of notes from say a lecture? this would be the self-justification in buying one ... to replace the shitty paper notepads and files n shit i have. im shit with paper, always losing important notes. can i use a cheap Palm for this ?

dude, get yourself a m100 if that's the case for brand new...

you'll easily get ur lecture notes down

and don't complain too much bout it - I'm using a Palm Pilot Professional wif the OS 2.0.5 upgrade =(

and yep, it still works like a charm and I can get all my lecture notes down...

it'd prolly have $50 resale value at the most now, but as long as I can use it and I don't get a Pocket PC, I ain't gonna sell it. (heck, it's a classic!~)

well vfone sells new ones for $249. I think that's reasonable..

look around for a 2nd hand one and u should get one for about $140ish if ur lucky, it'll easily work

hehehhe, my Palm Pro loses its screen touch capability sometimes, but I just shake it , and contact is restored... dunno, but it still works..

yer i think m100 would be the way to go.

I got a Palm m505, and never looked back (first PDA i owned)

and dont bother with the Pocket PC PDA atm, Windoze CE aint the best "lightweight" operating system, and my palm can do everything the iPAQ and similar can do (=

Well here's the report

i went into planet vodaphone to check prices on the m100 and they were having some sort of clearance sale. sweet i thought, might get a good price.

i saw the m100 for $199. choice! but then whilst i was looking around, i saw a Handspring Visor Deluxe that retails for $549 for $250 !!!!! $300 off!!! it has 8 meg of ram compared to the m100's 2, and has a much better screen, faster CPU, etc .... i was expecting to spend $250 so im stoked!! hehehe ...

the Visor is very very cool and I can recommend i ... a review is coming

Xizor i was wondering that, i mean i want one just to see what people use them for. My mobile keeps my appointments and contacts in it and anything which isnt phonebook/calander can just be saved in my outbox sms. And when i was looking at them they just didnt seem like they would be as good for keeping notes as well a paper pad.

Someone fill me in why there so great?

They are great for Adobe Acrobat, Word, Excel, and Power point documents, that may be bulky, or you are still working on.
Basically they are just very convient, nice to be able to carry round certain documents (esp at uni), and with the excel compatible clones, u can have formula's and graphs, easily updated, in your pocket.

And then theres games and MP3's

but i know they aint for everyone

oh and if u use WAP, then u can take advantage of a nice BIG screen

I've owned a palm V for almost 2 years now - got on when it first came out and I've used for study, business and personal purposes..oh and games too...so much that one of the buttons has worn out (damn tetris!!)

Anyway, I wouldn't recommend getting a palm device (either Palm or WinCE) for taking down notes at uni. I found thath whilst a palm is okay for text , they're no good when you're trying to take down forumlas, graphs, etc and it only slows you down. I had a palm foldout keyboard and I can touch type and still found it hard sometimes. Plus the screen is too small for full blown text editing.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Palm, but for intensive text manipulation and editing, I would get a laptop or just use pen and paper.

Just my opinion.
