Im pretty sure ive put it 2gether correctly. But i cant seem to get it working. Windows didnt detect new hardware. So i added it myself. Not sure if i added the right one. But anyway.
I made one mistake. I connected the cable to the Motherboard and my soldering wasnt that good. and didnt know that some solder was touching some other part. It then started to smoke a little and the cable was pretty warm. I quickly turned off the computer. THen found and fixed the problem. Can anyone help me out here. Ive got windows xp pro. How do i install it. Or does it auto detect it? cheers

Firstly, what MOBO do you have? Have you read your mobo manual to ensure you've made any necessary changes in the BIOS?
If setup correctly, the WinXP Pro should detect it automatically. Mine did. I have an ASUS A7V-333 and had to change a setting in the BIOS as it disables COM2. I also made a mistake in construction, leading to a very hot IR transeiver, but no damage done. Let us know what mobo you have first, and we can work on that. |

Ive got a Giga Byte GA-8Siml
It has a IR header on the M/B. Ill just checkout the BIOS settings. I didnt know that i had to enable Com port 2. I was looking for a IR setting.

I just checked my BIOS settings and there is no option at all for COM port 2. But wouldnt it already be enabled as there was smoke coming from it b4?

The power may be active, but it doesn't mean the port is. And it's not just a matter of enabling COM2.
On mine, I go into Advanced menu, then down the bottom is I/O Configuration. In there is COM1, COM2, and UART2. I leave the COM1 and COM2 settings as they are (they are set as IRQs). For the UART2 setting, I change that from COM2 to Standard Infrared. What this does I believe is change the signal passage for COM2 from the 9-pin serial port on the back of your computer, to the IR pins on the mobo. Now, the Gigabyte mobo BIOS may not have exactly the same options as my ASUS, but have a look and see if there is anything similar... Hopefully, even though it was smoking, it will be okay....and what exactly was smoking? Last edited by Wacky; 19th May 2003 at 4:00 PM. |

It should only smoke/get hot if you have something around the wrong way.
Make sure that all the cabling is in the right order. If you're not into electronics, make sure that you have the 4.7micro-farrad capacitor installed correctly (+ / -). My problem was the 4 pin connector. I installed onto the wrong side of the PCB, resulting in the wires being the wrong way around. Double check the settings on your mobo, as in which pin is which...it may not be the same as the kit guide. And get a magnifying glass if you haven't already, and doublecheck for solder jumpering... |

A quick search revealed this in a manual for that mobo:
Serial Port B Mode(This item allows you to select the IR modes if the serial port B is used as an IR port.Set at Normal , ifyou use COM2 as the serial port as the serial port, instead as an IR port.) ASKIRSet onboard I/O chip UART to ASKIR Mode. IrDASet onboard I/O chip UART to IrDa Mode. NormalSet onboard I/O chip UART to Normal Mode. (Default Value) Now, I believe you'll want the second option in that list. So if you can find the section in the BIOS, that's what you'll need. |

Well, I can't get the Nokia Application part of the PC Suite to work...It won't let me select a phone, or applications to install. So for that, I use Oxygen. For the phonebook editing, I use the Nokia one.
Great to hear that it's working now...what was the problem? |
