i don't know if any of you already mentioned Steve Vi (sp). I duno if anyone knows him, coz i had never heard of him before. Probably coz i'm not really into metal/guitars at all, but my friend showed me a video of this guy and some of the stuff that came from his guitar was amazing.

Clapton WAS god, maybe back in the Yardbirds, Dereck & the Dominoes and the Cream days. Him with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce was just brilliant....

But in reality, Clapton in the last 15 years has been pretty bad. He turned from a brilliant rock guitarist to limp wristed ballad writer/player.

I honestly dont think Clapton has written / played more than 10 great licks since 1985.

Oh yeah, technically Steve Vai is brilliant. His ability on the guitar is amazing. But I just find what he plays dull.

I'd take 1 John Lee Hooker note over a million Steve Vai notes any day of the week.

This thread is really subjective.

All players lose their creative streak with success and age.

Its part of growing old.

Yes, Hendrix and Clapton.

But you got to look at the path those guys learnt from and if you look from then , then you can say how good Vai, Satriani etc are.... because they learnt from those guys ...just as how good Hendrix and Clapton learnt from the Blues players like BB King and Rev Gary Davis etc.

How many singers owe there style from Elvis?

Anyway..... James Burton, Jimmy Bryant, Roy Nichols, Don Rich,Norman Blake, Dan Crary,Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendricks, Buddy Emmons,Lloyd Green,Scotty Moore, Luther Perkins,

Everyone that I've learnt a guitar lick from...........

It's funny..... the learning and mastering a lick is better than the listening...

Live In Hyde Park 1996.

I recently reviewed this DVD and if this is performance is 'limp wristed' half the guys mentioned here are wannabee faggots.

I admit that I'm old school and prefer Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant to the new guys...

Decided to add some more : -
Santana - the whole latino jivey thing its just so cool. You feel like boppin around the house and then he kicks in and you just start air guitaring away. Very notable Blues guitarist.
And i think we've neglected one of the best rhythm guitarists in the game. James Hetfield. Kirk has had a lot of mention here but we all know Metallica is James. All the rhythm, the chunky shit you just gotta bang to. And you can pretty much attribute all of NEM's success to him. His pained voice that piercing solo. That would definitely be one of my fav solos. Its not overly fast nor technical but the first seem notes just make me sit down and feel. And thats the mark of a great axemen. Not to mention he is probably the quickest down picker in the world!

Tony,

I dont think you got the point. I wasnt saying he cant play the cool stuff he did in the past anymore. I was saying that anything he writes/records now is soft and limp. He no longer makes songs that kick ass anymore. He just makes songs that exist.

There are a lot of good guitarists around, but I am sure if you asked all of them the same question, they would come up with the same answer.
Jimmy Hendrix.
