Default Infra Red Phone Reception

Hey guys..

I recently got myself a USB - IrDA to use with my nokia 5100 mobile phone. I have only just started playing around with it and I can't seem to get it to establish a connection for extended periods of time.

I was able to get it connected for a minute or two when I loaded up OMP II and it started automatically backing stuff up and half way though the transfers the connection dropped out.

Do you guys know where I should be pointing this device ?
Shoud I have it 2 cms away from the phone ?
I have taken off the case.. will that help ?

Can anyone help me out with tips / tricks for connecting your phone to an IrDA ?

Not to insult your intelligence, but you do know that Infra Red is line of site? I always place it as close as possible. If you are doing that and still getting the dropouts, check the receiver, did you build it or buy it pre-made?

heheh.. I know that its line of site.. and I have pretty much worked out that the IR port on the phone is on the bottom near the power plug thingy.

I just hope I haven't bought a dodgy USB IrDA.

Can't answer your question as to why, but i've got the same phone and a MA620 usb-irda adapter and it always seems to stay connected.

Does your USB InfraRed adaptor require drivers? If so, jump on the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers. It could just be an incompatibility between your phone and the infrared adaptor.

Yer mine does the same so i assume it is supposed to happen....when it's idle. From wot i've seen it's a good idea bc this infrared sucks the battery life.

Avoid sources of IR interferance. Remote controls (when being used), sunlight, some lamps etc

It seems to be working ok now, just a few teething problems. Its very sensitive.. I have to put it at just the right angle to get it going. But once it starts up everything is cool (as long as I don't bump it)

I've got a nokia 6610 and it connects fine to my dads laptop. It drops out after a period of inactivity, i'm not sure why because i thought the transcievers sent pulses to keep connections alive. It gets annoynig, like i upload something, then go on the net to find sumthing else and by the time i get back to copy it to my phone its disconnected and i need to enable ir on my phone again.

I've never had it drop out during transmission though, cept when i bump it or place sumthin in the lin of sight.
