Default Windows Boot Loader and Linux

I made some changes to lilo and now it won't boot. I don't have a floppy drive and I didn't make a boot disk, so I used the Mandrake rescue thing to install the Windows boot Loader. And now I can get into Windows.

But how do I boot Linux to install lilo again?

I was thinking I'd use the windows boot loader to do it but I'm not sure what to put in boot.ini

Right now there is:
Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
But what do I add in to boot Linux? Has anyone installed XP or 2000 after Linux to use the Windows Boot Loader and can tell me what to write?

Other than that I'm loving Linux

Boot from your install cd and at the prompt type "linux root=/dev/hd##" (replace hd## with the partition where linux is installed), then repair lilo.

Hmmm I don't understand. I went into the console and typed that but it said "command not found" What do you mean by prompt?

Ok I put it in at the boot prompt but it just kept taking me to the installation.

Anyway I just did and upgrade. It fixed up the boot loader and I'm back in Linux.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah I did it a while ago. Only with XP and 2000/2003 (because 95, 98 and ME don't have a boot loader).

Just install Linux first and then Windows. It will auto detect the other operating system and add it to the boot.ini

I'm not sure what it adds but I know it works.

Uuh I'm pretty sure that Windows doesn't automagically add Linux to the choices. It is possible, however. You need to take a copy of the boot sector with dd, save it as a file, and then add that file into the windows loader. These aren't exact instructions, but google for linux windows loader and you should find something.

It does, unless I dreamed the whole thing, which is quite probable, but I still think it does. In the Windows XP documentation somewhere it has info about multiple operating systems and it says that you should install XP last to use it's boot loader. I did it once, and I'm pretty sure it really happened.

Anyway I found this.

Multiple Microsoft Operating Systems, it just installs straight over any linux boot loaders, and will not add them to the windows boot loader.
