I'm thinking of heading out to get the Yamaha CG101 ($239) to do a bit of classical guitaring. Been listening to Jose Gonzalez a bit and wouldn't mind a nylon string to get some of those songs going.

Anyone got that guitar or played it? How does it compare to the cheaper C40?

I have a BT-2, it's unlike any other guitar I've played and just feels amazing, but as soon as you venture up the fretboard you lose all sustain and it sounds like junk.

for me it started with ben harper and that folky blues thing he did. I could tell that the songs were easy to learn (and they were :P). Then bang I discovered the magic of blues/jazz improvisation (within the limitations of the pentatonic scale ) but after wider listening to flamenco, world folk syles and piano concerto's i've gradually learnt to incorporate flourishes and methods outside the pentatonic scale. (though I've still got a fair bit to go).

but TBH. I wanna learn those hardcore jazz chords that I always hear pass chopping out.

when i was 14 i used to sit and watch "jimi plays monterey" video over and over again. especially purple haze. just to find how he did it. never did. i wish we had dvd's and computers back then. i use to buy channel tapes to isolate jimi playing outisde of noels bass. if i had the tools people do now i would have mastered it a lot quicker. what makes it more funny, i learnt to play rock on an accoustic cause thats all i had until i turned 16.

the painkiller solo gave me the shivers that inspired me like unforgiven did to you

i think i would choose the guitar over the amp. the guitar you really like may feel right to you, when the guitar you hate doesnt feel comfortable and then you will probably feel like smashing it.

10w amps arent very much money, you could always get one 2nd hand if you want a cheaper one.

Nope. I got a crap amp with my beginner pack and i gave up on it because it would always make hissing noises no matter what I did. Now I rely on Guitar Rig - performs brilliantly provided you have it set up properly and the effects are unreal. Don't think I'll be needing to use an amp for sometime (until I have more experience).

No, I've done some stuff straight in with a POD, and also using Guitarsuite. Guitar Rig is good, but I'd wonder at getting that over an amp for the same money. That would be fine if all you were going to do was sit in front of the PC and play. I don't find my chair lends itself to that though.

There's plenty of other free VST ampsims around though.

Buy the guitar you like as you can always get an amp later - else you'll be playing a guitar you don't like through an amp that sounds shithouse.

Willy.
