Default Networking problems. Need urgent help pls

ok... well i have 2 computers in my room , the main computer (P4 2.4B) being host. my network setup is:

1. Cable modem (motorola sb4100) running into p4 via USB
2. Onboard LAN running to a hub and the other computer connected to the hub

well, this setup use to work ... i was able to run the internet from both computers without a prob... but now after i formatted my computer, the network doesnt work? i cant connect to the internet via USB or Ethernet...

I tried running the internet via ethernet through the second computer and it works perfectly for some odd reason...

anyone had this prob ? or no the solution ? ...

Describe what your main PC's network status is like.

Are all the drivers installed correctly? No "!"s listed in the device manager?

Will definitely need more information to help you here.

How about you start from the beginning

Setup the internet with ONLY your p4 computer.

And then ttach the cabling for the other comp into the hub and so on........

I would recommend getting a crossover as this is a much better way to share a connection with 2 computers

unless you have more than 2

i've tried setting the internet on the P4 first ... but it still didnt work ...

i think it's tryin to recognise both onboard network and usb modem as internet connections ? ... or mayb just the onboard network

normally a format fixes everything ... but i've formatted it 2wice

As suggested above, make sure your p4 is connected to the internet and working before you even think about connecting another computer to it.
After you have the internet working on the p4 share it right click network connection ---> sharing ----> enable internet connection sharing (or whatever it is).

Next step would be to connect you other computer up through the hub/switch. Ensure you are able to ping each computer, try pinging your p4 from you other computer, and vice versa. When both of the computers are talking, then try and get the internet working on the other computer.

I don't know how much that helps.

More information is probably needed.

umm... unless im blind.
what operating system?

Either if its xp, or you know someone with xp, get the network setup wizard on the one with the cable modem 1st, pick " this computer connect directly to the net, and other computers connect through me"

Then pick the usb adaptor when it asks you to pick your internet connection

then run it one the other pc's, and select to connect through the main computer.

does optus have a crappy launchpad for you to connect through like telstra cable does?
or is it just like an old dialup screen that pops up when you open internet explorer?

no launchpad

XP configures it first time round
