Default ST6 probs

NO ABIT ST6 PROBLEMS NOW!

just purchased a Abit ST6 and after installing all the parts and overclocking back to where she was on the CUV4X i couldn't boot into windows, keeps saying currupt inf file, tried winxp repair did nothing, so i formated and copied install files, but after restart stil wouldn't boot so i clocked the celeron 600 at 600 and formated again and copied startup files then restart and it worked install winxp fine. so i goes back to BIOS andputs it at 694MHz worked fine put it at 801MHz with 1/3 pci divider and dosn't boot then i tried various speeds with 1/3 pci even 1/4 and no go but the pc boots into bios fine at 855MHz@95MHz FSB with pci bus of over 45MHz then when windows loads it currupts the HDD.

so why isn't the 1/3 pci divider working?

AND also my video card will not go agp4X or 2X its stuck at 1X, but in bios its set at 4X/2X (did 4x on cuv4x)

any ST6 owners?

specs:
ABIT ST6
Celeron 600@600 (on cuv4x was at 810MHz@90MHz FSB with 1/3 pci)
128MB SDRAM 3-2-2
WD 15.3GB HDD
LG CDRW 8x4x32
SMC 10/100 NIC
Voodoo Banshee 16MB

well after 6 formats and reinstalls of winXp and Win2K all things are not good, same as before

someone on overclocks u.s. forums had the same problem but with the 1/4 pci divider at 124FSB

shall i email abit tech support about this so they can do a bios update?

or will they just ignore me because i'm overclocking?

I've heard of many people on the other forums having problems with stability using the 1/4 pci divider on the St-6, but I have never heard of any problems with the 1/3 divider....

There does seem to be a problem that exists on all 815 chipset based mobos (only seems to show when using a chip that really isn't 'at all' stable, ie: wont post, at default vcore when overclocked to the desired speed). What happens is that the chipset reverts to the default vcore on bootup just as the system is firing up and dosen't up the vcore to the desired user defined setting in the bios until the bios post screen....

So for a few seconds there your, for example, P3 450 @ 1000mhz! is trying to fire up at default vcore until the bios post screen! Which, as you can imagine, just ain't gonna happen!

The way to rectify the problem is to trick the mobo into thinking the default vcore is actually higher than it is by vid pinning the processor....That way you can use for example 1.675 volts (I think this is the easiest vid pin mod) to help the chip fire up and then either raise or lower the desired vcore as normal in the bios....

Hope this helps....

thanks for the reply flu!d.

you wouldn't have a picture of the which vid pins to connect shown clearly?

thanks in advance!

As flu!d stated, some i815E/EP boards exhibit strange behaviour with PCI dividers - whether this is at 1/4 PCI or 1/3 PCI.

Can you describe exactly which FSB frequencies work with which divider (correctly)?? Another words, can you tell us the exact FSB and PCI divider when you can't boot?? Also, try to go as high as you can with the 1/2 PCI divider if you can't get the 1/3 divider to work. As you say, at 95Mhz FSB the 1/2 divider will give you a PCI speed of 45MHz+. Try lowering this until you reach the point at which you do not get HDD data corruption.

I'm assuming that your graphics card is the 16Mb Voodoo Banshee described in your specs. These are very early generation AGP cards, and I'd be very surprised if they actually supported the AGP 4X (AGP spec. rev 2.0) standard. Are you sure you could run it at AGP 4X on the CUV4X??

The ST6 has a "universal" AGP slot, meaning it supports both the rev 1.0 AGP spec (AGP 1X, 3.3V) and the later AGP rev. 2.0 spec. (AGP 2X/4X, 1.5V). It autoswitches between the two depending on the type of AGP card used. If your card is of the AGP rev 1.0 spec (3.3V, and AFAIK all Voodoo Banshee-generation cards were), then the ST6 will autoswitch to run it at the AGP 1X transfer rate and voltage level.

well i'm not trying anything above 40mhz pci divider as it currupts the hard disk and you cannot boot into windows, the only way i fixed it was a format and reinstall

if you read the mannual on page 3-3 it has the pci divider information:

if your FSB is between 50MHz-96MHz you get 2:3:1, 3:3:1, 4:3:1, 4:4:1 (i have tried all of these at various bus speeds, and only 2:3:1 works
if your FSB is between 97MHz-140MHz you get 3:3:1, 4:3:1, 4:4:1
if your FSB is between 141MHz-250MHz you get 4:3:1, 4:4:1

while running in the cuv4x i coul get it too run at 900MHz 100FSB 1/3pci an even at 927MHz 103FSB 1/3pci but only in bios, couldn't boot into windows.

as soon as i try 97MHz or more it auto selects 3:3:1 or 1/3pci and hasn't booted once, i'm thinking it dosn't boot due to 1/3pci not working somehow? i've messed around with the ram and its not it either, although during the upgrade from the ASUS CUV4X to ABIT ST6 i have a half dead 128MB stick of ram (works now and then, but not consistantly)

the voodoo banshee worked at agp4X on the CUV4X and gaming was good, now its a terd at 1X

thanks for the replies all

also when it dosn't boot i get the siren like beeping, not like the asus with high frequency beeps this thing could be put on the fire truck, can i RMA it? i never RMAed anything before, do you just act dumb and say it dosn't work and tell them a few things you tried? i also email abit tech support, but i don't know how soon i'll get a reply

ok just tried a whole lotta stuff:

i've tried from 66MHz to 110MHZ and it will only run at 1/2pci up to 96MHz at all/any voltages.

can someone with a ST6 and a 100MHZ FSB CPU try 96MHZ and below with 1/2pci and 1/3pci to see if it works? really interested in seeing if the 1/2 pci works at say above 66MHz

i'm a little um PISSED OFF right now, was trying different things in bios and booted into windows with 78MHz FSB 1/2pci after about 30seconds everthing went all SLOOOOOOOW!!! to almost a complete halt, mouse response was really bad ect.. so i hit RESET and put it back to default speed and OOOOOOOOOOOH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAAT, %^!@#&~` dam currupt files in "WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM" arrrgghh format and reinstall again (BTW This is the only PC in the House)
but i found out some more things though:

if using any divider but 2:3:1 at any FSB and voltage that ends in 1.#25, 1.#75 it will not boot and i get the FIRE TRUCK SIREN!

but if i use 1.#00, 1.#50 i don't get any beeps

if i use 112MHz FSB at 1.600v 3:3:1, 4:3:1, 4:4:1, i then finally get the SIREN

phew!

what needs to be wrong/right with the motherboard so i can return it, get mony back and buy a GA-60XET-C from another shop?

can i just return it, and say i couldn't get it to work after 7 formats and reboots and various bios settings and wouldn't do AGP2X with my video card which support 2X and it wasn't what i expected? do i say that the 1/3 pci divider isn't working? which it isn't

or does it have to be a dead board?

ps. only asking because i've nevver had any problems with hardware before, so never needed to return it, and i bought it from gamedude too.

I would certainly contact the vendor and tell them the whole story. If the board is not working as it should (whether OC or not) it should go back. But contact them for an RMA no. first.

I warn you right now....The XET is an excelent board and has many fantastic and rare overclocking features, but, I exhibits the vcore on inital startup problem that many 815 chipset mobo's exhibit and may require vidpinning to rectify the problem (although, in reality you are gonna have to vid pin any 815EPb mobo you get to use with a chip that is on the edge....

But, overall, the XET is a great mobo and totally reccomended!

Hell, the crazy Japaneese have got them to 200 mhz FSB!! With no external Turbo PLL

what. so does the st6 have the cold boot pproblem too? argh, i bought it because the cuv4x has the cold boot problem and i thought the st6 didn't, anyways gamesdude dosn't open till 11am (lazy bums) so i'll ring em then.

you think i could get my money back and go to computer alliance and buy a GA-60XET-C, or would they make me either get another ST6 or swap it for one they sell.

*&&$&^%&^%&^ yeah

Did the vid pin mod to give my cB0 celery 600 1.65v default (normally 1.5) set the voltage to 1.70 and 1/3 pci divider yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhh but can't run as fast as it was when on cuv4x, it's running at 792MHz ATM but it can run at 900+ in bios just not in windows, i'm using the dreaded GORB and temp in bios is 38c just getting idle and load temps now
