Default Benefits of Dual CPU?

For video encoding purposes ie. DiVX , it is it worthwhile having dual CPU setup or is it only viable if you have SMP applications running on say a server?

Tossing up between going single or dual...

I use to have a dual 466 celeron and that was my favorite machine i've had, everything in win2k runs that much smoother, and considering i only had 128mb ram with it, it ran better than my friends computers with PIII's 600 with 256. With athlons you'll get a better performance boost with duals then i did with celerons and I definetly noticed the difference. As soon as asus come out with there A7M266-D i'm getting one, can't wait to have dual again.

Layoric, VooDoo has them for $580. I think Gadgetman is selling them for $575. Search in the forsale forum.

However the reduction of the total usable PCI slots is a turn off.

Hellllllll yes...
I got an A7M-266D now, stuck with a 1400 t-bird till I can get some dough, but I borrowed 2 xps and tried out flask... The encoding progress window, instead of kind of showing a rough preview on the tbird.... It was basically just playing back the movie as it went on the dual.

So yess.... Real-time encoding... I'd say definitely the go if you do a lot of that stuff.

The pci slot thing... Hmm. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. But, on the plus side, you get USB2.0 for nothing, which might be nice, and I've never used all the pci slots anyway (I am now, but), so I didn't care. If it's going to be a big issue, and you need usb, just wait for the msi board, I guess.
[Edit: Ahh. Epox, perhaps, for the fixed usb. Dunno about MSI ]

Yup, greater than real-time encoding is only possible with duals (see sig)

Or worst comes to worst, quicker than a single. I recently was working on some nasty video effects (10 DV AVI's flying around) which took 9hrs of rendering on my Dual PIII 800. Both CPU's were running at 90%.

I would hate to try it on a single CPU box, especially as I could still surf without effecting the rendering too much.

Cheers,
AP.

Plus Braging Rights really do apply here....

I have a dual P3 866 on a Tyan Tiger 230.... absoulutly bullet proof, I have it at work doing Seti on both CPU's and its also acting as our proxy server.....

My next box will prolly be Epox dual mobo with 2 XP1800+'s...

One PCI slot is lost by the addition of a USB controller, requiring a PCI slot, which reduces them down to 5 (3 if you have problems with the 66/64 PCI slots).

oh thats rediculous, surely they have overcome that prob, i thought that that was rid of a while ago, i run 2 onboard USB controllers on mine USB1 and 2.0 and still have all slots avail.

ridiculous

There is a known problem with the MPX chipset whereby the built-in USB does not work. Hence, ASUS provides an add-on USB card, which uses up 1 PCI slot.

The problems using 33mhz PCI in the 66mhz slots has been fixed. you need to use the system in jumpermode. (read the 2cpu forum for more info)

5 PCI is enough for 99.9% of users
