I use Java VM v1.4.1.05 as I find that it works best with Firebird.

Select J2SE v 1.4.1_05

I was a little dubious when I first loaded Firebird: it didn't seem to load much quicker than IE, and pages were definitely slower.

Now I've tried the optimised build (and it doesn't seem to load any quicker, perhaps even slower). After tweaking a whole bunch of settings... the thing runs like a dream... even marginally quicker than IE. I think I'm a new convert

Only downside I can see for slower systems is that it is using 50+MB of RAM currently, with only three windows open. Hmm.

I have made my own fix for this problem:
place this in your userchrome.css (http://texturizer.net/firebird/edit.html#css)

Code:
/* Makes vBulliten Post/reply message boxes wider - as they are in IE */
textarea[name="message"][rows="20"][cols="40"][wrap="virtual"][tabindex="2"],
textarea[name="message"][rows="7"][cols="40"][wrap="virtual"][tabindex="1"] {
    width                      : 420px !important;
}

Internet Explorer uses a lot more memory then Firebird on my PC.

Firebird with 3 Tabs open = 15,608K Peak Memory Usage.

Internet Explorer with 3 windows open = 47,392K Peak Memory Usage.

I think that would be because your puters have to run all he files that involve IE to run x ammount more. where as in FB or any other Tabbed browsing, it doesn't need it.

we can probally expect to see tabbed browsing in the next installment of IE I guess.. thats if ms catch on

firebird for me only uses about 14MB with 3 tabs open.

which is less then ie6 which is a fat ass pig when it comes to memory.

the next ie will only be available for longhorn so unless you upgrade no new ie for you.

anyway by the time longhorn comes out firebird will be better, stronger, faster.

Q: when / will there be the next version of IE?

A: As part of the OS, IE will continue to evolve, but there will be no future standalone installations. IE6 SP1 is the final standalone installation.

When I load firebird, I now get "syntax error: illegal character ÿb/"

edit: Some where in the message, it also states that the error is in the user.js file.

I just installed FB0.7(optimised for P3) over FB0.6. Some problems.
I had absolutely no problems with FB0.6.

1. I can't go to any site. Whatever URL I type in doesn't make the browser go to that site. However, if I choose ones in my bookmark it seeks the site and displays them ok. Any idea how to fix this?

2. With 3 tabs, mine is chewing up 45mb of mem. Any ideas on how to tweak this?

Thanks for the help.

I have no probs with keep old profiles but you HAVE to delete the old firebird install before installing the new one. Just delete all files and directories in teh MozillaFirebird directory and unzip the new stuff there and away i go

As for speed.. IE has NOTHING on firebird for rendering speed imo. load times are in favour of IE on the machines i've used firebird on.. but the extra couple of seconds (if that) it takes to load firebird is well worth the HUGE increase in rendering performance. Not to mention it handles CSS2 correctly unlike IE.
