My mobo died last night, so i got a new mobo today.
I don't want to do a clean install, not just yet anyway because i've got important stuff on the HD What do i need to do so that XP doesn't crack the shits at running on a new mobo? |

another hard drive and a windows xp cd, or a burner and a windows xp cd. that is all i can think of at the moment. just install windows on another hard drive, copy your data across. or install windows to the same drive(so there are two windows installs) burn the stuff you want and format.
There are other ways, but they are the easiest it think |

If the motherboard is alot older than the new one then there will most likely be conflicts... it happens to me when i go between P2 or older and XP's P4's etc.

It depends what you are upgrading from and to. It shouldent take more than an hour, two at the most, depending on your equipment. And an hour or two for a new computer isnt much

leggit is having problems getting windows installs to work with different hardware atm, so he's biased. You should be able to just stick in your new hardware, and install the drivers for it. Windows will boot and either find it's own generic drivers (which you should replace with the manufacturer's drivers from the CD or their website), or it will ask you for the windows cd or the mobo cd. Basically, plug it in, and if it works fine you're away. If not, put your old mobo back in and then start to look for alternatives.

Another alternative is to install the new mobo, then boot from your Windows CD and install windows over the top of the previous install. All of your applications and data should be fine and all of the settings you had will be carried over to the new install.

I managed to get XP to cope with a new mobo, CPU. ram and video card.
It just booted up, detected everything, I installed the drivers and off we go. I ended up doing a fresh install a month or so later, but didn't really have any problems.

No you don't. It's my standard re-install path. I re-install over the existing windows folder and everything stays the way it was, even down to the desktop image. The install will warn you that your documents and setting might be lost but it never has for me.
Try it. Last edited by Mred32; 4th December 2003 at 5:44 PM. |
