Default What do you use your DVD Burner for?

Obviously burning dvd's, but do you backup data, back up dvd's, burn movies etc?

I've had my dvd burner for 2 weeks and havent used it yet! I've still got a spindle of 25 princo dvd-r's! I've just kept burning a tonne of cd's..

Not much so far!... Made one backup of some files but thats about it, there's plenty of storage on my drives atm to not warrant having to burn onto dvd.

That and I haven't really put much into investigating how to burn dvd movies from our dv camera yet...

It's already been recognised that using CD-R as an archiving system gives insufficient data integrity. DVD's won't give much better retention, but it does give me the chance to 'refresh' my data onto more dense media.

So I cut down on management of my offline backups, as there is ~1/6th of them to manage

I am around 1/2 the way through converting to DVD - copying to HD, burning, & verifying takes ~ 2hours per DVD disc.

Have burnt a few DVD movies, mostly as curios to try in various stand-alone DVD players through my family.

Fansubs fit very nicely onto DVDs. I'll be moving all my CDRs onto DVD soon, but i have to buy a 25/50 pack of DVDs first. Other than that i'll be backing-up programs, music, system stuff onto DVD RW discs and moving data between mine and others computers. I have not tried making a DVD video disc yet.

So basically i'm doing the same thing i did with CDRs. The main difference is DVDs take up less room and one DVD is easier to transport than six CDs. I'll have to find somewhere to put the old CDRs.

First thing I did was ghost a complete windows setup with all necesary utilities/programs to one x dvd.

Full system restore takes 20-30 minutes, compared to 4-5 hours (have to download latest patches, service packs etc on a 56k modem).

Also use it to backup downloaded files, digital photos taken with my camera etc.

I'm not sure how much cd's cost, but since DVD blanks are now $1.40 each, its so much easier to use 1 x dvd than 6-7 CDR's.
