I am in Sydney and living in a unit. However it is hot as hell over here... really considering getting an AC. I might consider a split machine as they tend to be more quiet and more flexible as to where it is installed.
Do i have to get premission from body corp to get it installed? Does it really use up a LOT of electricity? |

Depends what size you want your unit to be.. if you just want say 2 rooms a/c or your whole house...
I have both splits and out the window/wall style aircons, both work fine, I myself prefer the split systems, but you tend to pay abit more for them ![]() Yes your electricity bill WILL rise with them.. just remember to switch of when they aren't in use, or consider going on a tarrif

there's this type of AC.. as powerful as a split unit but half the price. Uses 13A power so its cheaper to run.. portable.. and does not require water/ice. I seen it and its quite cooling. The selling point is its portable, energy saving, no drilling, as cooling but not freezing cold.

I got a split system for my room, EmailAir. Was about $1600 to install and costs me a farking fortune to run (its on 24/7). But it is worth every cent! Gone are the days of the fan.
You will have to approch the body corperate if you intend on makeing any modifications to the walls/windows during install. Most will say yes becuase its free aircon when you leave (split system are almost imposible to remove!) nem

I have reverse cycle ducted air con in my house, it's rooted cause some zones cool/heat more than others, my room gets down to a constant 17-18C when it's set to 21C and when it's 30-35C+ outside, it does help, only problem is that the pc aint in my room so i cant take advantage of this nice cool air

I own the apartment so that get rids of a lot of the minor issues. But then If you use split systems, the fact is that you will have to modify the external walls. Which I doubt is allowed. The worst thing is that NO ONE has AC in my block of apartments.
I MIGHT be ok if I put the split machine at my varenda Think I might just get a 'water fan' instead. haha |

After all these years we finally got that aircon in the ceiling (evaporative I think) and it's been the coldest summer in victoria that I can remember. Used it twice so far, although fri/sat might double that.

Upgrade your switchboard to 3 phase.
The extra cost will be offset by the lower overall cost of the new tariff. The startup of refrig aircons produces a initial horrific power load, then they are cheaper to keep operating. In the Isa we get 43 ~ 45 degrees in summer, most people opt for the board upgrade when installing larger split systems and then run them 24/7 with acceptable electricity bills. Hope this helps.
