Drive started making a clicking sound then this message popped up and is in the error log with about 50 other system errors to do with the hdd
Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. I turned the comp off, the back on and in ide detection in bios the harddrive kept making the start up sound that harddrives make (dunno how else to describe it) but wouldnt stop making it. Then ide detection showed it as a WD800BB (as in 80gb 2mb cache) so i dont know what the fuck happened but i do know i lost about 100gb of data. EDIT: This isnt my main drive obviously if i organise an RMA for this drive, would the data be non recoverable? because there is confidential things on this drive and i dont really wish someone else to see them Last edited by Sephir0th; 31st December 2003 at 3:24 PM. |

Dont RMA the HDD if your worried. Personally, i've never had any issues with somebody looking at the contents of a repaired drive that i've owned.

Generally there sent back to WD and theyll try to reapair them or use them for spare parts. Any info on the drive is usless to a supplier or the manufactuer. There's really no need to worry unless you have child pornography. Then I would hunt you down myself. ![]() |

I'd zero fill (sorta low level format) the drive first, to be sure :-)

Afaik, when you RMA a drive, they usually just throw your drive into a bin (maybe destined for the smelter to be melted back down), and send you a new/reconditioned drive?

run a bigass magnet over it?
the drives are normally repaired ie the faulty part is removed and replaced with a new working part, that drive is then prepared to be used as a warranty replacement or "Servicable used part" thingo that IBM had

the fuji 20gig's were renowned for that problem aza2001. The hard drive controller is rooted. If you have another fujitsu drive just unscrew the controller component and fit it on the stuffed drive. Works a treat, i've had about 150 die at work!

Great, I just ordered one of those exact drives. Have there been alot of problems with them? I've been running a 800JB for quite a while now and had no problems at all, which is why I chose the same one in 120 gig. Usually I read everything I can about something before I buy it, but I figured its little brother had served me so well I didn't need to worry.
So has anyone heard of many problems with that particular hard drive? |

I had the exact same thing happen with one of my 1200JBs. Nothing I tried for ages could boot properly with the HD attached.
Turns out that the Master File Table was the cause. I had almost given up and was going to format/repartition the drive for a test install of Mandrake 9.1 I got thru the bootable loadup in mandrake and came to the partitioning section before the actual install starts. Their is an option there to recover a partition. Used that and it restored the Master File Table on the drive. Recovered every single bit of data on there. (note this was a NTFS partition). |

I've been running a WD 120JB for over 6 months with no hassles MarkWasabi. From all reports I've seen there an excellent drive.
I had a WD 40 gig JB die on me after 5 days. That's rare but it does happen. I find it's a good idea to install speedfan when you first purchase a HDD and check it's status in the SMART health area. The drives that have died on me normally have indicated a problem there beforehand. Off the shelf the wd 40jb showed a health status of 25%. Not good |

Yeah, I had a look over at storagereview.com and it looks like they're an excellent drive in terms of performance, and the reliability survey (requires registration) gives the impression that they're pretty reliable.
And thanks for mentioning Speedfan. I'd never heard of it (or if I had I hadn't taken any notice of it). I hadn't found a program that could give me that much info on my HDD. One question though - is it able to get the HDD temperature? I haven't been able to get it off MBM5, and I thought Speedfan may be able to. It lists a whole lot of temps but it's hard to tell which is which. |
