Does anyone in Adelaide have any plants they want to give away or sell? The algae attack has killed off all the plants in my tank. Also, does anyone have any intestinal parasite medication? I don't want to go out and pay $20 for a small bottle just to treat one fish.

kow - decrease the salinity to 1.019/1.018 and raise tank temp to 29degrees c. the coral in the tank will probably retreat or close under these conditions but it shouldn't effect them for the duration of "the treatment". whitespot needs to be treated upon infection and for the following days to catch the eggs that hatch - i wouldnt recommend these water conditions over a long period of time for a reef tank due to the effect on the corals - all u need is a couple of days. salt water "white spot" hates hot, fresh water.
ongoing whitespot hints of water conditions not being adequate - protein skimmer not cleaning the water enough, not changing water regularly enough for the quantity or some imbalance somewhere. tell him/her to also pickup a cleaner wraisse (fish) for $40-$50 or cleaner shrimp ($100 - $150). both feed on the parasite and in conjunction with the step above should clear everything up - but the underlying cause needs to be identified and corrected. the wraisse is more aggresive in keeping the other fish healthy but can be annoying (but they do look kool as well with blue, black, white and silver stripes - they also go to sleep all curled up which is pretty kool all by itself). some may recommend a fresh water bath for the infected fish but the effort of pulling apart the "reef" in the tank to catch the fish makes it an impossible task (from experience).

I jsut got an upgraded filter (still the dodgy in tank style, but much bigger turnover)...
I thought if I run both for 24hrs, this will mean the new one will gather some of the "good bio stuff" from the other filter/tank. Sound right? Anything else?

That will work, but you will need to run it for a while to build it up properly.
Best bet would be to transfer the media from the existing filter to the new one - if that's possible. Otherwise, as you mentioned, just run them in parallel for a few weeks and then remove the old one

Yup, your theory is fine, but it will need more than 24h to build up a decent-sized colony of bacteria in the new filter material. It's pretty hard to over-filter a tank, so as long as the current isn't too much, run them both together for a while.

One of my Lombardoi has been attacked to the point where its tail fin is almost non existant, this happened very quickly over a period of maybe a day and a half. I stopped feeding my fish as much as I used to a few days ago as well mainly because the filter was getting dirty and I had to change the filter material almost after a week and a half. Needless to say I feed them now as much as I used to (3 times a day)
I have put the attacked Lombardoi in its own net cage in the tank but I was thinking of putting it in another community tank with 3 large severums (not aggressive) and a Red Jewel of about the same size. The PH is 7.6 instead of the 7.8 - 8.0 that I keep the lombardoi in though. What would be the best option (that is the least stressful and a better chance the fish will get better) for me to take?

Though I'd post a bit of and update.
Then ![]() and now, 4 months later ![]() I had a really bad case of ich. Took out my new loaches, cherry barbs, flames and half the plants died from the meds. I've now got corys, bristlenose, gold gouramis and various barbs. And snails. Arrgh!!! At lease they're tiny at the moment. Lost track of exactly what plants I have but they're all going strong. Flourish + CO2; lots of pruning. White Rhino White Rhino |

However if it does cope there is a risk that it will go feral on the severums but I would think the Jewel would give it a run for its money. In my opinion Lombardoi and Auratus are up there as the two nastiest fish that ever swam - for their size. I would think about getting rid of it and if you want Malawis go for something nice and shiny like an Electric Blue or a Peacock.
