Gday guys, I've got my old fish tank sitting in the garage since I moved 7 months ago, and I've got some free time to set it back up. It's a 2.5 footer and I had a couple of clown loaches, 5-6 neon tetras and a couple of others which I now forget.

Anyway, I'm going to set it all back up tomorrow, and I'm after some ideas for a couple of decent size fish I can put in there. The little ones were nice, but I'm thinking big and agressive this time

The last one was hard to get looking right, and to clean, I figured the cheap filter it came with didn't help-the type with the sponge type inserts. Any recomnedations for a better filter also? Tank size is around 70-80 litres from memory.

WTF is wrong with my fishy?
This happened overnight.
Water readings for PH, Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate Levels normal.

Is it Dropsy? How do I treat this? contagious?
(ps no quarrantine tank)

Or better to send this fishy to the Big Aquarium in the sky?

it certainly looks like dropsy

http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/hddropsy.htm

evaluation and treatments. dropsy is not overly contagious so an isolation tank may not be needed, but its best

you can just use a large open top bowl as a isolation tank and do regular water changes into it from your main tank (ie main tank water -> isolation tank -> drain, while refilling your main tank).

In general most people I know who have kept gouramis have had nothing but trouble. They start out ok and then it all ends in tears with the fish getting some manky disease or what not.

They are not good. Well in my opinion anyway.

Dude think about a theme for your tank. Like a specific region or area. Also with a small unit they often look really good stocked with a school of small fish. Some that spring to mind are harlequin raspbora's and pacific blue-eyes.

What ever you choose may sure you let it cycle for a while before stocking it.

Yeah I remember all the set-up from last time. I just found that it was hard to get the tank looking really nice with small fish, maybe with a bit of planning I can set it up a little nicer this time. I like the idea of some bigger fish though, I always wanted to get some colorful bigger fish--ala Venustus/electric blue/big clown loaches etc.

Maybe I could sell off this tank and get a 4-5 footer, but then that's more money, have to make a whole new hood/stand/lighting/filter etc etc

Hey mal,

I had a barramundi and some archers in a 2ft tank. They were pretty rad. I'd buy the barras for about <$5 and they'd be 2cm long and let them grow. They were awesome to watch catch their food when they are younger (they used to hunt the feeder fish) when they got older though they were eating 30feeder fish a day so it was a pain in the arse feeding them. The archers were cool also, they'd always squirt my girlfriend when she sat on the couch. Thing was there was a 0.5cm gap for them to squirt though. I don't know how the hell they knew the angle to spray water through the .5cm hole and get it 2m across the room to hit my gf. They really didn't like her.

If I ever forgot to feed them they'd squirt me as I sat on my computer as well.

I agree with this! We had a couple of flame Gouramis and they both died from some weird "TB". (That what the aquarium store dude called it.) We actually had to Euthanaise (sp?) one.

He recommened after that to pretty much steer clear of them, unless u reeeealy wanted them. So for simplicity, no gouramis!

The had tried to breed the disease proneness out of the gourami stock but I still wont touch them. I would hate my red humps and green horsefaces to get TB

I took the heaters out of my tanks a couple of weeks ago. Does anyone think this was a bad idea (fish seem fine).

FYI I'm in Brisbane.

I used to do that in summer, but I wouldn't do it with all the fish i have now.
