Using this internet connection test it seems my cable speed is 2.3MBps. So I am pretty sure I will go with the 11b variety of wireless card. (In any case, this is only to connect a laptop to the net for study purposes). Also, the gateway PC only has 10mbit NICs in it so it won't matter anyway

imo you should go 11g i am always frustrated with my 11b setup even though i'm only on adsl.
I got it for my laptop (before 11g was around) and it doesnt compare at all to ethernet speeds and drops packets etc etc.

i am upgrading to 11g ASAP hoping that it will give me better networking.

i DO have optus cable, and i DO have an 11b network. Hence the quote from my last post, which said that the 900kb a sec file i get through wired, only goes at 400kb when im going through wireless (i use the file as a tester).

11b network will NOT provide you with full speed cable internet.

use this speed test for a more relevent test to optus cable - it is designed to specifically test optus speeds under the best circumstances.

I just did a test with that under wireless and wired - 800kb ish on wired, 400kb on wireless.

incidently, although my posts may sound it, i am not talking down 11b networks - i love mine, and 400kb is more than enough for me anyway - but while im set up close to the router, i use wired, simply because the speed is greater.

What I posted was the theoretical max bandwidth...sure it might not be the actual speed you download, but since when did we start going around picking on people who call their connection "56K"? You would be suprised at how close you can get to 10Mbit when you are the only person in your area with Optus (which happens when cable is rolled out into an area).

i standcorrected with my 802.11b my speed was 320KB/s and my desktop was 425KB/s

but keep in mind this isnt the kinds of speed you will get on your average download and its more likely the fact 802.11X's sofar aare halfduplex

anyone tryed this test on 11g and on a halfduplex 10 or 100meg network?

11g is good and all, but if you already have B, isnt worth the upgrade, may as well wait for 11n to come out by then, boasting 100mb, higher security and the like.

11g also has a few issues with range, not being as powerful as 11b, but it will revert down to that, so no loss.

If you dont have anything, then 11g is fine, but i wouldnt upgrade 11b right now.

Just as a point , I have fixed many an Optus customers PC and speed tested the connection to show them my work, and I have on a couple instances gotten 1000Kilobytes/s transfer rate when downloading files from optusnet pages... that way I can prove their connection is fast and my work is done anything else is optus' fault.
From my experience with wireless 802.11b is as slow as a dsl connection sometimes, with my banwidth monitor showing just over 1megabit usually through to tops of 5megabits... 802.11g is nice not much percievable difference between it and ethernet... I'd upgrade to 802.11g but I am lazy and don't use wireless much anymore seeing my laptop is outta commission and I am currently pda'less.
