US researchers have developed strap-on robotic legs to allow people to carry heavy loads over long distances. The Berkeley Lower Extremity Exoskeleton, or Bleex, is part of a US defence project designed to be used mainly by infantry soldiers. The device consists of a pair of mechanical metal leg braces including a power unit and a backpack-like frame. _________________________________ Whoah, can you imagine once a full body system is completed. I believe they had a larger scale one a few years back for construction workers... basically they stand inside this 'skeleton' and can carry huge amounts...

I see my dream machine becomming a reality. My goal is to create and exact, fully working replica of the exoskeleton used in Aliens, the forklift hands one. One day I'll get around to it.

I wonder if this could be used for helping people with mobility problems, it would certainly be of great help to many people (well, once you get past the cost of it).
As a better way of charging this thing and the weight is dropped, it will indeed be a useful tool to our society.

Then they need to migrate this technology for a fully mechnical robot. Oh yeah, Gundam/Jap anime style robots are becoming a reality.

can't see this being useful in the fanciful anime style big robot thing any time soon.. sticks out too much. but the more power-armour style thing that would only make the wearer slightly larger than normal would work wonders.
edit: just actually checked the article and that seems to be exactly what this seems to be.. strap on hydrolics etc to enhance normal strength/endurance.

This has been around for a while. In the next decade or so materials and engineering will probably have advanced enough to make some sort of practical implementation.
