Personally, I prefer Bloodshed Dev-C++ 5 on Windows. It has an excellent coding GUI and uses the latest MingW32 GCC compiler pack and libraries, it's also completely free to use:

thanks a lot for that link. that is a really useful site. a lot of the free compilers are really just steaming piles, but that one is very good with a good IDE. the site also has some other good tools too.
