Question AMD 1G at 750 why?

ok i've just got my new comp up and running.

Its a thunderbird 1G C on a Abit KT7 E.

Why is it running at only 750?

What are the settings to make it run at full speed.

I will overclock it later when I work out the normal settings.

You got the Athlon Thunderbird-C which has a 266MHz DDR FSB. It has a 7.5x multiplier. Therefore you must set your BIOS (softmenu) and set the FSB to 133MHz. However, your Abit KT7E does not 'officially' support the 133/266MHz but from what I heard, it CAN in fact run at 133/266 flawlessly.

You see.
7.5x 100 = 750 <- this is what you are running now.
7.5x 133 = 1000 <- this is what you want to run it at.

Set the FSB to 133 and you are done

Hope you have PC133 ram, if not then you can unlock the Multiplier and then change it to 10x100

Thanks xtreme2k ,

ok i tried theses settings and it wouldnt get past the ram test,

CPU op speed = user defined
Multiplier factor = x7.5
CPU FSB/PCI Factor =133/33 mhz
cpu fsb plus (mhz) = 0

cpu power supply = cpu default
core voltage = 1.750v
I/O voltage = 3.40v

are these the correct settings?

I am not too sure with the menu names and stuff with Abit Athlon mobos as I am using the Asus A7V133 myself. However, this is what you can try.

Set all memory timings to slowest, all the memory latency to highest. Disable ALL video caching(it is actually faster to disable video caching anyway).

Some less relevent things. Try run your CPU at 750 with memory at 133MHz. If this works, but when you run at 1000 it doesnt, it means your mobo cannot takes 133Mhz FSB but your memory is capable of 133.

If it's set at cas3 and won't run, it definitely won't run at cas2 as it is better...

If you get the windows protection error at 133fsb, it means that you have gone too far, which is weird. As your meant to have 1gig...

xtreme2k, how do you disable video caching?

KT7E does NOT officially support the 133/266FSB. However, from the reviews I have been reading, it should do 133 easily.

Note on the video caching.
These should be DISABLED

System BIOS Cacheable
Video BIOS Cacheable
Video Memory Cacheable

video/system caching is off by default anyway.. you'd have to go out of your way to change it..

if i had to take a guess, id say your KT7E doesnt like 133MHz - you might need to followup on Dans suggestion and pencil in your L1 bridges; however, since this voids your warranty, it may be easier to just head back to the store and exchange the cpu for a "B" type, unless youre planning to overclock, in which case, dont worry about it, and go find a 2HB pencil
